MongoDB vs. MySQL

Schema Design

MongoDB offers a high degree of flexibility in schema designs. You can simply put your documents within a collection; there needn’t be any relation between these. It uses a JSON type manner that can even be stored in a collection. However, the supporting data structure poses a restriction. Also, you will have to constantly optimize schema according to the way the application accesses data.

MySQL, on the other hand, requires you to define tables & columns clearly; now, every row in the table should be having the same column. This leaves very less or no space for flexibility in the data storing procedure by normalization.

Querying Language

MongoDB employs query language that is unstructured. For creating a JSON document query, we need to refer it to a document having properties that we wish to see in our results. The execution requires a rich set of operators interlinked using JSON.

MySQL, on the contrary, communicates with the database using a structured query language. This simplicity makes it a powerful tool. It comprises 2 parts, namely, data manipulation language (DML) and data definition language (DDL).

Speed & Performance

While until now each enjoyed a unique and equal position, when it comes to speed & performance MongoDB takes the lead. It has proven to be much more efficient than its counterpart. According to research, MongoDB takes way less time in performing functions like interesting, updating, and selecting than MySQL.

Security

MongoDB enjoys flexible privileges with its role-based access control. It comes with Security features like authentication, authorization, and auditing. It can also be encrypted with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and  Transport Layer Security (TLS) to limit accessibility to the intended client.

MySQL has a security model based on privileges that allow you to authenticate a user and accordingly provide user privileges for a specific database like UPDATE, CREATE, SELECT, and so on. However, MySQL cannot explain when it denies access to a certain user.

Suitability

MongoDB is preferable when the user requires high-availability of data for automatic & instant recovery. Thus, it tends to serve companies requiring to manage large amounts of data and have a big budget. It is also suitable for cloud-based computing.

MySQL is suitable for small budget projects that require high performance and rigid schema design as it does not offer flexibility. It’s a low-maintenance DBMS that can handle a high transaction rate yet ensures data security.
