How to Strengthen a Single Brick Wall

Strengthening your single brick wall is a must to ensure that it won’t collapse right away. But, how do you strengthen a single brick wall? To reinforce your single brick wall, you may use reinforced concrete jackets and FRP structural repointing

Reinforced Concrete (RC) Jackets

This technique consists of jacket application either on one side or both sides of single brick walls. This strengthening technique can be used both in brick masonry and stone masonry walls. 

In using reinforcement jackets, the plaster must be removed from the walls and the mortar should be clean between the bricks. 

When there are cracks in the brick walls, these should be grouted first. Anchor ties are then inserted in the pre-drilled holes. 

The drill surface is then cleaned and moistened. After that, the cement slurry is spread on the drills and masonry surface. In addition, two layers of concrete are applied with reinforcement mesh in between them.

The two sides of the reinforcing mesh of the wall are connected with steel anchors’ support. These anchors are tied using tying wire or welded with the mesh. 

The thickness of RC jackets varies from 30mm to 100mm, depending on the method of concrete layers application. During application, it’s best to know that there are rules for strengthening a single brick wall that you should follow.

Strengthening Masonry Walls Rules Through Reinforced Concrete Jacketing

  • The horizontal and vertical reinforcement minimum must be 0.25% of the jacket area.
  • The tie’s diameter at the well’s end must not be less than 8mm. Furthermore, its maximum spacing should be 150 mm.
  • The RC jacket needs to be anchored to the old concrete with dowels. The space in both directions shouldn’t be more than 600 mm.

It’s also essential that the jacket is transferable to slab diaphragms. Just provide epoxy grouted anchors and diagonal connecting bars into the holes produced in slabs.

FRP Structural Repointing

Compared to FRP laminates, masonry walls’ structural repointing has more advantages. This method is simpler as it has reduced surface preparation and puttying and sandblasting aren’t required.

Moreover, the masonry aesthetic is preserved. Moving on, here are the components of FRP Structural Repointing

  • Masonry joints grinding
  • Masonry masking for stain prevention
  • Epoxy-based paste application to masonry joint
  • GFRP Rods Installation

These are the ways you can strengthen your single brick wall, but is this essential?

Is Strengthen a Single Brick Wall Essential?

You may or may not do this. But, if you want a more solid masonry wall, strengthening it with Reinforced Concrete Jacketing or FRP structural repointing is ideal. 

It’s ideal in a way that it can prevent your brick wall from collapsing when an earthquake happens or an extra load is pushed into your walls. Masonry walls without reinforcement may have sufficient compressive strength, but they’re weak under parallel loads actions, causing wall tensions.

When wall tension occurs, this may lead to wall cracks or collapse when an earthquake occurs. Thus, it’s best to reinforce or strengthen your single brick wall to ensure its durability during unfortunate conditions or when an extra load is pushed upon it.
