3 Myths About Depression You Need To Stop Believing

Depression is a common Mental Health problem affecting millions of people around the world every single day. It’s an issue you may deal with yourself, which can get in the way of your life. You want to run around, travel the world, and feel happy all the time. Every now and then, thoughts enter your head and stop you from doing this.

This mental health concern is no joke and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Having said that, you’ve probably encountered all kinds of articles or opinions that tell you certain things about depression. Some try to be helpful while others are plain dumb. In the article below, we’ve picked out three depression myths you need to stop believing as they’ll surely make your health even worse.

#1 Depression is extreme sadness

People who don’t have depression will say it’s a state of extreme sadness. We use the term “depressed” all the time when what we mean to say is “We’re very sad”.

You see, depression is not extreme sadness – it’s a mental health problem that stems from a chemical imbalance in your brain. Yes, you might feel sad, but there’s a difference between being sad and depressed. It’s an important distinction to make because if we think we’re sad, the easy solution is to cheer up. This isn’t possible with depression and you start feeling worse if you try to cheer yourself up but still feel down.

#2 Depression is a temporary state

You hear this a lot – again, from people without depression – as they tell you that your feelings will pass. Depression is not a temporary state, at all. It’s a lifelong affliction that you will have to deal with. There’s currently no cure, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck feeling the full effects of depression forever.

You can get treatment for depression that helps you manage the symptoms. Many people have successfully overcome the worst of this condition and gone on to live happy and fulfilling lives. It’s not something that magically goes away with a special cure, but you can learn to live with it and stop it from ruining your life. However, you must realize that depression isn’t temporary and won’t just go away after a while. You have to take action or it will only get worse.

#3 Depression doesn’t develop in “happy” people

There’s a massive myth that you won’t be depressed if you’re living a happy life. People who travel the world and explore different cultures can still be depressed. Even if you’re smiling every day and loving what you do, depression can hit you.

As mentioned before, it’s a proper medical condition that occurs when the chemicals in your brain are out of balance. This leads to hormonal imbalances that severely alter your mood and the way you act. You could have the best day of your life every single day and still suffer from depression.

This is why it’s so important to spot the signs of depression and get help as soon as possible. Get yourself on a treatment plan and actively work to calm the symptoms. From here, you’ll be able to live life to the fullest without letting this mental health condition weigh you down.
