BightspeedPlans.com researched The Met Gala themes over the past five years to prompt AI to create digital art. The company used various prompts and art style descriptions to generate Met Gala looks from AI. MidJourney is an AI system that can create realistic images and art from a report in natural language. The company collected the best images for each theme to compare AI’s work to fashion designers. Here’s a look at the 2023 Met Gala AI renderings, from ethereal gowns to bold ensembles.

“Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most captivating, prolific, and recognizable forces in fashion and culture, known as much for his extraordinary designs and tireless creative output as for his legendary persona. This immersive exhibition will unpack his singular artistic practice, inviting the public to experience an essential part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation,” says Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met.

According to The Met, “Sketching was both Lagerfeld’s primary mode of creative expression and his primary mode of communication. Illustrating its significance to the designer’s creative practice, another introductory gallery will be dedicated to the premières d’atelier—the seamstresses regarded as the architects of Lagerfeld’s vision, responsible for translating his two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments.”

The exhibit illuminates Lagerfeld’s creative collaboration with a series of on-camera interviews conducted by French filmmaker Loïc Prigent, who followed and documented the late designer’s collections from 1997 to 2019.  Sketches explore his work with the serpentine line and the straight line, opposing yet complementary forces in his designs for Chanel, Chloé, Fendi, and Karl Lagerfeld. The aesthetic and conceptual dualities evident in his designs stem from the serpentine line signifying Lagerfeld’s historicist, romantic, and decorative impulses, and the straight line signifying his modernist, classicist, and minimalist tendencies.

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will be on view from May 5 through July 16, 2023. Architect Tadao Ando designed the exhibit working in collaboration with The Met’s Design Department, to produce a physical manifestation that embodies the intersection of the straight and serpentine lines.

Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour served as co-chairs for the event, which provides The Costume Institute with its primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements. CHANEL sponsored the exhibition and the benefit. FENDI provided major support with additional funding provided by KARL LAGERFELD and Condé Nast.

A publication for Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, written by Bolton, will be released in May 2023, published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press.
