5 Ways To Boost Your Confidence

Confidence is a powerful, sometimes even necessary, tool to be successful. Unfortunately, many people struggle to feel Confident. Whether it’s due to physical insecurity or irrational fear, feeling good about yourself doesn’t always come naturally. Thankfully, there are things you can do to boost your self-assurance. From practicing self-care to developing your skills, here are five ways to improve your confidence:

1. Address Your Insecurities

It’s important to remember that looks fade, and your personality is what’s most important. That said, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to enhance your appearance so you can feel more confident. After all, how you look can definitely play a role in how you feel about yourself. And while you shouldn’t let small things bring you down, it’s okay if you want to improve your appearance.

Maybe you’re struggling with acne-prone skin or hair loss, whatever it is that’s holding you back, consider finding treatment options. And don’t be embarrassed about asking for help! Regardless of your insecurity, you aren’t the only one. Take hair loss for example. Androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male (or female) pattern hair loss, impacts over 50 million men and 30 million women. And while losing your hair can be embarrassing, treatment exists.

Don’t let small insecurities get you down. Rather, find ways to make yourself feel better about those insecurities so you can build confidence.

2. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Do you compare yourself to your co-workers? Are you constantly wondering why your life can’t be like the influencers you follow online? Or maybe you compare your career progression to that of your friends. While making comparisons is natural, it can hurt your self-esteem, especially if it leads to unrealistic expectations.

If you’re just starting a diet plan, it’s not fair to yourself to compare your progress to that of someone who does CrossFit daily. You need to compare yourself to your previous self. Slow improvements over time are the key to making lasting changes.

Constantly comparing yourself to other people can also lead to envy. Rather than seeing an individual’s success as an opportunity for personal growth, it can make you feel like you’re not good enough. You may start to doubt your achievements and your ability to be successful in life. That can wreak havoc on your confidence. Instead of giving in to comparisons, remind yourself that everyone’s journey is different.

3. Practice Self-Care

Making time for self-care is important, especially if you’re struggling to feel confident. Self-confidence and self-care go hand in hand, as investing in yourself can help you feel better about yourself. According to a national survey, about 65% of Americans felt more confident about themselves after practicing self-care. So while it may sound cheesy, focusing on yourself can do wonders for your overall confidence.

Contrary to what you may think, self-care doesn’t mean spending hundreds of money on spa treatments or taking yourself out to fancy dinners. Self-care is simply about taking care of yourself. Exercising, grabbing a coffee with a friend, and going to sleep before 10 p.m. can all be self-care. It’s really based on what you need to feel good. Other examples of self-care could be going to therapy, eating a healthy diet, and setting boundaries.

Simply put, as long as the activity promotes your overall well-being, it’s self-care. And while you may be saying, “I don’t have time to practice self-care.” Make time. Not only can self-care improve your confidence, but it can also improve your mental health. Remember, self-care is a necessity.

4. Leave Your Comfort Zone

This tip may seem out of place, but leaving your comfort zone is a surefire way to gain more confidence. The truth is, the only way to grow is to try something new — something that you’re not necessarily comfortable doing.

You don’t have to go skydiving if you’re afraid of heights (although, that’s an option). But, if you’ve always avoided public speaking, consider volunteering to hold a meeting at work. Or, raise your hand in a company meeting when you have a question. If you’ve never traveled alone, but always wanted to, go ahead and book that flight.

Leaving your comfort zone can teach you something new. It can also present opportunities that were never there before. Traveling alone, for example, will force you to meet new people. Stepping out of your usual routine and pushing yourself to try something is scary. But after you do it, you’ll be amazed by how confident you feel.

5. Develop New Skills

Increasing your skill level is a great way to boost your confidence, as it can help you perform better at your job. For example, maybe you work in marketing. If so, you may want to consider getting a certificate in search engine marketing or Google Analytics. Both will teach you new skills and deepen your current understanding of the topic.

Consider taking a free course on LinkedIn or Hubspot. Additionally, you can attend professional development training, go to a seminar, or read books about the topic. There are hundreds of options available to help you grow your skills, and many are free. Chances are, your company even offers training courses that you can attend. Ask your manager, and they will probably have resources for you to check out.

Not only can learning a new skill enhance your performance at work, but it can also open more doors. You may take a course and realize you want to change your career or apply to a different position at your job. Knowledge truly is powerful, so taking time to learn something new is worth it.

Be Patient

Contrary to what you may think, confidence isn’t something people are born with. It takes practice, patience, and work, to feel confident. Thankfully, the tips above can help you improve your confidence. If you start making gradual changes to better yourself, soon you’ll be the best version of you — and that’s something to be confident about.
