Staying Productive at Work

Everyone experiences a bad day at the office. You know, those days where you can’t seem to Focus or get anything done. However, if it’s becoming the norm, then it’s time to make some changes. The good news is that there are a number of ways to improve your productivity.

Eliminating Distractions

If you work in a large office with many co-workers, they can contribute to your lack of productivity. It’s fine to meet up at the water cooler and discuss past events, however, if the conversation continues back at your Desk, you’ll end up losing valuable time and focus.

Bad habits, such as smoking can also cause you to lose focus when a craving for nicotine hits hard. Smokers take more breaks versus non-smokers and tend to have more sick time due to a weakened immune system. Thankfully, you have a choice. Get up and Stretch

If you sit for any length of time, the habit slows down the flow of blood to the brain, which, in the end, affects your ability to think clearly and solve problems. During your lunch hours, you can also head outdoors and take in the fresh air and the natural surroundings. When you return to your desk, you’ll feel better and ready to tackle your work.

Lunch and Snacks

When your home and you eat a heavy meal, you feel sluggish and tired. You may even close your eyes for a few minutes to relax. The same thing happens when you eat heavy foods at work. Only there you can’t take a 10-minute power nap. Instead, try eating lighter healthy meals like a garden salad with broiled chicken and for your breaks pack a piece of fresh fruit, nuts or sliced up fresh veggies. You’ll fend off the hunger pangs and boost your energy at the same time.

Get a Good Night’s Rest

Many people stay up late and get up early. While this practice may work initially, it’s only a matter of time before the lack of sleep catches up with you. Without the proper amount of rest, you will probably feel tired all day through. You also won’t be as sharp and lack focus. If you have trouble falling asleep, change up your nightly routine.

Eliminating caffeine in soda, coffee or tea several hours before bed and avoiding eating within the last two hours will help your body relax. It’s also in your best interest to avoid checking emails or engaging in social media prior to bed to prevent stimulation to the brain. You can take a hot bath and use scented oils to relax, put up blackout curtains and sleep with a fan to block out streetlights and noise.

Organize Your Workspace

The age-old expression “chaos breeds chaos” is true. If your desk is a mess of files, papers and assorted supplies in no particular order, it will cause you to lose valuable time. Luckily, this is something you can fix rather quickly. Take a few minutes to declutter your workspace space and organize it. In the end, you’ll have a clean space giving you more room to work and your files and important documents will be readily available.

Increasing your productivity at work is something you can improve by making a few changes in your life and on the job.
