Take another look at your local library

Does the cost of a magazine subscription stop you from subscribing? If you’re a member of a Library, you may be able to download a magazine for free. For example, in Cambridgeshire, you can download and read a magazine on your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can be notified by email when next month’s copy is available. This is one of many free services provided by libraries.
It’s free to join a library. This blog covers the Cambridgeshire County library system but many counties offer similar services.
Libraries go online
A library’s website is a good place to start. You can search in the online Library Catalogue for an author or Book. The results may surprise you. In Cambridgeshire, your book may be available in audio or ebook format – ready for free download – as well as in the traditional paper or hardback format. You may need to install additional free software before you can download. This software is available free from the library website.
Book services
If you’re interested in a paperback or hardback book, your library provides a surprising amount of information. In the online library catalogue, it shows you the branches that currently hold the book. If it’s not at your local branch, you can request to have it sent there for a small fee. If it’s on loan to someone else, you can reserve it. If it’s popular, you’ll automatically be put in a queue of requestors. You’ll receive an email notifying you when it’s available.
Activities
Looking for activities in your community? Libraries host book groups, knitting clubs, music as well as activities for children.  Most activities are free, though there may be a small fee for some.
For children and teens
Your local library has books and events for children of different ages.
Babies and toddlers – Rhymetime and Storytime events
At Storytime, your child can enjoy half an hour of stories. Rhymetime is half an hour of songs and rhymes.
5-11 year olds
Offerings for 5- to 11-year olds include young graphic novels, stories on CD and junior fiction such as the Harry Potter novels.
11-16 year olds
Tweens and teens can choose from fiction, manga and graphic novels. For homework and exam revision, the library provides access to dictionaries and encyclopaedias through its online resources. Revision guides are also available in branches.
Wait…there’s more!
Your branch may also offer free WIFI and free computer use, including access to Microsoft applications for word processing and presentations. Did I mention access to books in other counties? I’ve covered some services, but there’s more to be discovered. And most are free or available for a modest fee. Happy exploring!
