Gluten & Dairy Free Cheesesteaks

We started out by cooking up some Mushrooms and onions in a little bit of dairy free butter.  I let them cook until my mushrooms shrunk a little and turned brown and my onions started to caramelize.

The best steak to use for a cheesesteak is a ribeye sliced thin.  However, when my husband asked the butcher at our local grocery store to slice a ribeye thin he was told they don’t “do that there.”  Seriously? What do butchers in grocery stores do nowadays?  The butcher profession really needs to come back …. Anyway, getting off topic.  We ended up settling for some beef shaved steak that was prepackaged in the meat section.  I’m happy to say though, we’d use this meat again in a heartbeat for homemade cheesesteaks!

Once my mushrooms and onions were cooked enough for my liking, I moved them to the side of the pan and added in the shaved steak.

The shaved steak only takes a few minutes to cook up (which is so wonderful because that means less time between now and when you can eat this wonderful homemade cheesesteak)!!!

Once the meat was all cooked I mixed in the mushrooms and onions.

I put mayo on my Udi bun and then piled it high with my cheesesteak mixture of shaved beef, onions and mushrooms.  Then I topped with Chao vegan cheese and put it in the oven on a high broil for 1-2 minutes until my cheese started to melt.  We ate this with some potato chips and we were both on cloud 9!

Ingredients  (Makes 4 cheesesteaks):

14 oz shaved steak

Toppings of your choice (mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc.)

4 slices cheese (For dairy free cheese I used Chao).

Gluten Free Bun (I used Udi hot dog buns – which are really the size of sausage buns)

Ketchup/Mayo/Wiz (if you are truly from Phila and aren’t dairy free)

1 tablespoon butter

Directions

1. Saute your mushrooms, onions, and whatever other fabulous cheesesteak fixin’s in a pan on medium heat with 1 tablespoon vegan butter.  Once they have started to sweat & your mushrooms cook down, push to the side of the pan.

2. Add your sliced beef steak to the pan & let brown.

3. Once your beef has cooked, mix the onions/mushrooms in with your shaved steak.

4. Mayo your bun & place bun on a cookie sheet.  Pile high with your steak/mushroom/onion mixture & add cheese on top.  (When we made these again the next day with the leftovers we put the cheese down under the meat and we preferred that way).

5. Place your piled high cheesesteak in the oven on a high broil for 1-2 minutes until your cheese gets melty (watch closely).

Enjoy!  Just because you’re gluten and dairy free doesn’t mean you can’t have the foods you’ve grown up with & loved your whole life.  You just need to modify.

What are some foods you’ve tweaked to be able to enjoy??
