Top Food Facts from Around the World

The culinary world is an exciting and international one in which to grow your career. To become a chef, you will not only need a keen interest in Food and cooking, but also take an interest in cuisines from around the globe too.

This month, we round up some of our top global Food Facts.

  1. In Italy 1.5 billion cups of coffee is consumed every year.
  2. The first pizzeria opened in New York in 1895, whilst Italians invented the Margarita pizza in the 1800’s.
  3. The French eat about 500 million escargot (snails) per year.
  4. 27 000 tons of seafood is exported from Goa (an Indian coastal city) every year –  most of which is prawns.
  5. Britain’s most popular curry is Tikka Marsala.
  6. Honey is the only food edible to humans that won’t go off. They have found edible honey in ancient Egyptian tombs.
  7. Avocado pears are native to South and Central America where they are commonly known as “alligator pears” because of the appearance of their skin.
  8. Japanese have cultivated square watermelons because they are easier to stack.
  9. In 1450 there were no tomatoes in Italian food, no peanuts in Thai and no chillies in Indian food. This is because the famous ingredients are all native to the Americas and were only introduced to those countries following Cristopher Columbus’ voyages after 1450.
  10. Wasabi that we generally eat is usually not the real deal and is mostly colored horseradish.
  11. Chocolate was once used by ancient civilizations like Mexico as currency as early as 250 AD.
  12. US fast food giant McDonalds sells 75 burgers every second, globally everyday. That is 6.5 million burgers each day and 2.5 billion burgers a year!
