Upma is a popular South Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil breakfast and snack dish. Now it is also lovable dish by all other states of India. It is also known as different name like, Uppuma, uppittu, etc. Its spicy version is also known as khara bhath.
Upma is very nutritious, healthy, delicious and easy to make at home. It is made with roasted semolina and vegetables. Semolina (rawa) is a good source of fiber and low in sodium and cholesterol. Onion and tomato are also good combination in upma. It is also made with very little oil.

Ingredients:
Semolina (Rava/suji/cream of wheat) – 1 cup
Black gram skinless (Urad dal) – 1 tbs
Split Bengal gram (Chana dal) – 1 tbs
Curry leaves – 7-8
Mustard seeds – ½ ts
Green chili – 2 chopped
Peas – ½ cup
Carrot – 1 chopped
Salt – to taste
Oil – 1 tbs
Water – approx 2 – 2 ½ cup
Method:
1. Dry sauté semolina in a pan at medium flame for 5-7 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a pan; add mustard seed, when it sputtering, add udad dal and chana dal.
3. Cook till dal changed into golden color.
4. Add curry leaves and green chili, cook for a minute.
5. Add peas and chopped carrot.
6. Add water and salt, cook at medium heat for 10 minutes or till dal becomes soft.
7. Add semolina slowly and stir continuously.
8. Cook till water totally observed.
9. Hot and healthy UPMA is ready to serve.
Serving Tip:
Serve hot with masala tea (masala chai) or Sambar. You can also garnish with crunchy sev and coriander.
