The Selection

Since its holiday time and the feasting time of year, I needed to temporarily divert from DASH diet meals.  We had plenty of extra ham left over from Christmas day.  I thought I would experiment on whittlerz.com to see if I could get any hits on recipes that included ham and pasta.  Surprisingly, over 100 recipes were returned.  The Recipe title with vodka caught my eye immediately as I have a bottle in the cupboard from a previous meal.

Since it is a family style dish, I also get to use my new serving platter I received as a Christmas gift from my daughter Jen.

The Preparation

I thought this would be easy, but it took longer to prepare than anticipated.  The recipe included 1 quart of Heavy Cream reduced by half.  OK, why not just use a half quart?  It turns out that reducing heavy cream means to boil it on the stove.  The downside is that you have to continuously monitor the pot.  I looked away to cut the onions and ham and the cream almost boiled over the pot.  Stir, stir, stir.  A little painful.

I may have cooked the pasta a bit too long (while waiting for the Sauce to simmer).  When mixing the sauce with the pasta, most of the penne noodles broke up (as seen in the photo).


The Outcome

Great creamy sauce made a good combination with the pasta.  Definitely recommended for others.
