The Selection

To celebrate Christmas last month my youngest made a few batches of gingerbread cookies.  One of the required ingredients for the cookies was ground cloves.  One small bottle (45 grams) was over $10!!  With almost a full bottle left, I wanted to get my money's worth out of the cloves instead of having the bottle sit unused in the cupboard. A perfect scenario for finding the first Sunday Dinner Recipe of 2016 on whittlerz.com.

Searching on cloves alone on whittlerz returned over 2,600 recipes.  Nice, but too many.  I recalled from a prior Sunday Dinner that cabbage was one of the healthiest and nutrient rich foods.  Entering this combination into whittlerz resulted in 46 recipes.  The chicken recipe caught my eye as it puts me back to a DASH compatible recipe and helps use a number of other spices in the cupboard.

The Preparation

The sauce for the chicken and dressing for the slaw can be made ahead of time.  This makes the overall preparation easier.  I like spicy foods, so I ended up using 3 serrano chili's for the slaw dressing instead of 2.

Preparing the chicken was pretty easy.  Lots of spices to pull from the cupboard, but mixing them together in a small bowl is simple.  The chicken was supposed to be cooked on a grill, but since my outdoor grill is not operational, I ended up cooking the chicken on a pan with a little olive oil.

The Outcome

The chicken was OK.  Not sure what special taste all the spices were supposed to provide.

I mentioned using an additional serrano chili on the dressing for the slaw.  Wow, was it spicy!!  It made the experience of eating raw cabbage and onions desirable.

My recommendation is to cook the chicken any way you wish.  The dressing for the cabbage slaw is a winner.  Very tasty, and a great way to eat healthy.
