chokladbollar – swedish chocolate balls

these Chocolate balls have been following me for a while now. in general they are quite similar to my rum truffles, little sweets like these where also common in hampi and goa in india. there they were a welcome variety when the hunger for sweets was getting the better of me (the typical indian sweets are too sweet for my taste). when i was in stockholm last summer, i got to know these chokladbollar. admittedly i mostly eat cinnamon buns and knots, but when my hunger for chocolate was too overwhelming it was chokladbollar. however just like the cinnamon buns they aren’t for the faint hearted as they are made out of loooots of butter.

yesterday i saw the recipe for these little balls in the new mutti, immideatly went into the kitchen and made a batch. you only need a few ingredients and in 15 minutes you have a nice little treat. according to the recipe you should add 3 tbsp espresso but i substituted it with a swig of rum.

ingredients (about 24 balls)

  • 75 g desiccated coconut
  • 200 g soft butter
  • 150 g fine rolled oats (i only had the normal ones, which was fine)
  • 50 g cocoa powder
  • 100 g suger (i used muscovado)
  • 1 shot rum or 3 tbsp cold espresso

place coconut in a small bowl or deep plate. with the dough hook of a handheld mixer knead butter, oats, cocoa, sugar and rum, then use your hands to knead into a smooth mixture.

form about 24 balls out of the chocolate mixture, roll in coconut and either place on a baking tray lined with baking paper or into a plastic container. put in fridge for about 30 min.
