Bhajani Chakali

The most favourite Diwali snack


Read Chakali in Marathi 
Ingredients for Bhajani - 
  • 1 kg white rice
  • 1/2 kg chana dal
  • 1/4 kg udid dal
  • 1/8 kg moong dal
  • 1/2 cup coriander seeds
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds

Bhajani Recipe : 
  1. Clean all the above ingredients separately. 
  2. On medium heat dry roast each dal separately, until golden brown. 
  3. Dry roast white rice. Then roast cumin seeds and coriander seeds. 
  4. Let all the above items cool down.
  5. Mix all and grind to fine powder.This is called Bhajani. We will use it to make chakali.

Please note - Do not wash dals for cleaning. Instead use damp cotton cloth to clean dals separately.

Ingredients for chakali
  • 1 cup chakali bhajani
  • 1 tsp Asafoetida powder
  • 2 - 3 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Chakali Recipe :
  1. Heat some oil in a pan. Pour it on bhajani and mix well. 
  2. Add sesame seeds, Asafoetida powder, red chili powder, Salt, turmeric powder and 1 cup boiling water to bhajani. 
  3. Make a pliable dough of bhajani. You may use little lukewarm water to knead the dough. The dough should be soft. 
  4. Now put the dough in chakali mold. Press and move the mold in circular motion to get the chakli shape. (Normally 3 rounds)
  5. Heat oil in a kadhai. Let the oil be sufficiently hot, turn the flame from high to medium heat and put chakali one by one in the kadhai. Fry 2 or 3 chakalis at a time. Do not over-fry. Fry till golden-brown.
  6. Drain and put on paper to remove extra oil. 
  7. Let the chakalis get cool. Store them in an Airtight container.
