GBBO with Real Baking - Cake Pops

Wow! Tudor week has proven to be very entertaining! I was really impressed with Andrew's interlocking pie gears, and his jousting knight was er, very entertaining too! 2 more episodes before everything changes for Great British Bake Off (GBBO), fingers crossed it will still be as good.

Back to our GBBO challenge. This time I cheated a bit and had to send the kids out to distract their dad, because I was also secretly baking his birthday cake! I still used Vivid Imaginations' Real Baking kit though, because they have proven to be very useful (and no harm adding a bit more fun to your baking right?).

This time I trialed their Cake Pops kit. It's good I tried it out on my own first, because I used the wrong cake batter for it (flourless. NEVER use flourless cake batter for cake pops), and they wouldn't stay round! I do love the cake pop cake mould though, and will definitely let the kids do it next time, with a proper solid sponge recipe!

The Cake Pops kit comes with:
Cake pop mould
Mini donuts mould
2 Chocolate cone mould
10 Cake Pop sticks
Instruction booklet

You can check out our previous post for more information about the Real Baking Great Baking Set that has also been used here.

Note that we didn't use the mini donut mould this time.

Right: Had fun cracking eggs using the egg cracker
Divine Dark Chocolate melts beautifully

I really like the bowls in the Real Baking Great Baking Set, they matches one of my large blue bowl too!

Making the chocolate cones for the cake pops were a bit tricky. I poured away the extra melted Divine's Dark Chocolate (so good!) after giving the cone mould a good coating, as they all dripped to the bottom (although I think the kids wouldn't mind that!). But the chocolate cone became too thin and cracked when I tried to attach the cake ball onto it.

So for the chocolate cones, I would recommend coating them with 3 layers of chocolate, freezing each layer until hardened in between.

Since my cake pops didn't rise, I decided to put them in the blender and turn them into crumbs. I had some left over buttercream from making the cupcakes, so I used that to stick the crumbs together to form a ball. I only managed to make 2 balls out of the 4 original ones though. The shapes aren't as round as baking them straight from the mould of course, and the cake pops are also more dense, but at least I rescued the little disaster!

I was rushing around in the kitchen, so grabbed whatever decoration we have in sight (Christmas ones haha...). I do think that they lack a bit of red and fun though. This really should be a job for the kids! But now that I have a bit of experience, we should be able to do it without hiccups but with plenty of fun next time!

After trying out Vivid Imaginations' Real Baking range, I think that it's worth recommending them for the little chefs. The sets are fun with attractive colours, made from quality materials, and comes with plenty of tools to make lots of fun and cute things. Our favourite are the egg cracker from the Great Baking set, the chocolate mould designs from the Chocolate Pen set, chocolate cone moulds to give Cake Pops a cute twist, and all the cute cookie cutters from the Cookie Kit. For the price and the number of quality products you get from each set, they are definitely value for money.

You can find the previous Real Baking reviews here, and you can buy them from Amazon UK and all good toy stores.

happy baking with kids!
