Green Gram Plantain Kitchdi

Green Gram Kitchdi is wholesome and one of my favourite discoveries..!!

Green Gram is very proteinous and rich in fiber because of its peeled and unpolished nature..!! I personally cook this dish when I am breaking the fast, as I make it very simple and almost bland..!! Its more a Sattvick diet and at times, I innovate it to be more rich at times..!!

I cook Kitchdi using a lot of vegetables and in lot different ways..!! Almost Oil less, not hot, spicy, no heavy masalas, My favourite Earthy Green Gram Kitchdi..!!

Today I have chosen to make Raw Plaintain Green Gram Kitchdi..!! Plantain is more starchy and blends very well with the Green Gram..!! Using Rice is optional, if added, it makes a very balanced and rice-y Yummy taste..!!

Preperation:

Ingredients:

  1. Plaintain (Raw Banana) : 1
  2. Green Gram: 3 cups
  3. Rice (optional) : 1 – 1½ Cup
  4. Water : 4-5 cups
  5. Salt : as needed.
  6. Aamchur powder: 2 tbsp
  7. Sugar : 1 tbsp
  8. Coriander :a handful
  9. Chillies : 6-8 (Green +Red)
  10. Cumin Seeds: 1 tbsp
  11. Turmeric : pinch

Tempering ( optional) :

  1. Oil : 1 tbsp
  2. Hing : a pinch
  3. Curry leaves : hand ful

Procedure:

  1. Since we use Plantain, chop the plantain and put oil and sautée the pieces for 10 min so that the pieces do not mash up whole cooking and keep it aside..!!
  2. Add soaked ( soak the night before) green Gram, Rice, salt, Aamchur powder, sautéed plantain pieces, Sugar, turmeric, Chillies, Ghee, coriander leaves and cumin seeds and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles..!!
  3. Once the dish is ready and go for tempering with all the ingredients and add it to Kitchdi and close the lid for 10-15 min…!!

  • And it will carry a different sautéed plantain and cooked green Gram earthy and ghee flavour which is yum yum..!!
  • Serve it with any chutney with ghee..!!
