Conversation Heart Cake Bombs

Cute and colorful, these Conversation Heart Cake Bombs are simple to make! Candy-coated chocolate cake with cute little sayings are the perfect way to show loved ones you care this Valentine’s Day!

‘Tis the season for all things heart shaped! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what sweet treats you’ll make your friends and loved ones as a token of appreciation. After all, Valentine’s Day is about more than just dates! These simple, colorful Conversation Heart Cake Bombs are a new take on the classic Valentine’s Day candy that I grew up with. Filled with a mixture of chocolate cake and frosting, cake bombs are a delicious and adorable way to enjoy your favorite cake recipes.

Conversation Heart Cake Bombs for Valentine’s Day

Think of cake bombs like larger, shaped versions of cake pops. In this case, a silicone heart mold is all you need to create these Heart Cake Bombs in your favorite colors. Write custom sayings with a food marker to finish them off, and try using sayings from real conversation hearts or simply write your own messages that apply to who you’re gifting them to. Either way, I’m sure they’ll appreciate that you took the time to hand make them a treat!

You can customize these cake bombs with your favorite cake and frosting recipes, but I personally use this chocolate cake and vanilla frosting recipe. Whatever your favorite flavor is will substitute just fine, but in my opinion, nothing says love like chocolate.

The key to making your cake bombs come out just right is to use a pastry brush to coat the inside of the mold heavily. Otherwise, you risk missing spots or having a too-thin layer that breaks when you remove the cake bombs from their molds. No one wants that! A pastry brush will save your recipe and keep the shell nice and thick.

Once your conversation heart cake bombs are ready, package them in a little bag and give them away! Nothing says “you’re awesome” like personalized mini desserts!

Conversation Heart Cake Bombs

Ingredients

  • Store-bought chocolate cake boxed mix or Homemade Chocolate Cake
  • Your favorite store-bought frosting or Homemade Frosting
  • Colored candy melts
  • Pastry brush
  • Silicone heart mold
  • Red food marker

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake and frosting according to the package instructions. Let the cake cool completely before beginning the cake bombs.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, crumble the cooled cake. Add about 1/4 cup of frosting and mix with your hands or a spatula until the mixture sticks together, but is not too wet. (Note, you probably won't want to use all of the cake.)
  3. Add more frosting or cake as needed to create the cake filling. Move to the fridge until ready to use.
  4. In small bowls, melt colorful candy melts in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring in between.
  5. Once the candy coating is melted, use the pastry brush to paint the candy coating around the bottom and sides of the heart mold in a very thick layer to create the cake bomb shell.
  6. Move candy coated mold to the fridge to harden.
  7. Remove the mold and cake filling from the fridge. Take a ball of cake filling in your hands and press into the prepared mold until mostly full with cake; flatten tops.
  8. Re-melt the candy if needed. Use a spoon to fill in the rest of mold with candy coating and finish the cake bomb shells. Move to the fridge to set.
  9. Once the candy has hardened, carefully remove the cake bombs from the mold and place smooth-side-up on a serving tray.
  10. Use the food marker to write conversation heart sayings on each and serve.

Notes

Home Chef Tip: The best way to ensure even writing is to start with the middle letters! This way, the middle letters of words always line up with the middle of the hearts.
