Things Worth Doing Are Worth Doing Well (Monday Musings: February 19, 2018)

One of my favorite movies is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes featuring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe.

In one scene, they are trying get some incriminating film from a private eye who’s been following them. Their method of achieving this is to get him to their suite, get him drunk, and search his pockets.

Not only do they make a “mild” cocktail of scotch, vodka, brandy, and gin, but Marilyn’s character, Lorelai Lee, adds some sleeping pills to his drink.

During this scene, Lorelai responds to her friend Dorothy’s concerns about how potent the drink is going to be. She responds by saying: “Things worth doing are worth doing well.”

It’s been many years since I’ve seen this movie, but this phrase always stuck with me.

It’s a pretty classical idiom and there are loads of variations, but this version so easy for me to keep in mind.

Do you ever have something in your life you’re normally passionate about, but find yourself putting in half the effort?

There are many hobbies I love, but sometimes I find it hard to peel myself off the couch and turn off whatever I’m watching on Netflix. When I do finally start moving forward, sometimes I don’t produce the best product.

Then I remind myself “things worth doing are worth doing well” and I find it revitalizes me. I hope you find it motivating as well.

I just don’t suggest the part where you try to drug someone with sleeping pills and booze. Probably not a good idea.

Incidentally, one of my other favorite old movie quotes was also stated in this scene:

“There was an old fellow named Sidney,
who drank ’till he ruined his kidney.
It shriveled and shrank,
yet he drank and he drank.
But had his fun doing it didn’t he.”
