Sorshe Ilish is a classic Bengali Fish curry.It is an extremely delicious and spicy fish recipe, that you can be easily prepared. Mustard oil and muster paste are important for making this dish.

Bengalis are called ‘maache-bhaate Bangali’ for their immense love for fish. Riverine Bangladesh always comes with enough delicacies for all fish lovers. The fish lover Bengalis go for extra miles for fresh and tasty fish. And when it is a topic of fish the first name pops up in mind to every Bengali is hilsa fish (ilish mach). This is not like other fishes that are available throughout the year. It is only available during monsoon.

INGREDIENTS
  • Hilsha/Ilish fish – 8-10 pcs
  • Mustard seed paste – 2 tbsp
  • Green chillies paste – 7-8 pcs
  • turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Nigella seeds/Kalojire/Kalonji – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Mustard Oil

TIME REQUIRED : 20-25 minutes

PROCEDURE

STEP 1

Wash the fish. Sprinkle salt and turmeric powder over it and both sides of each piece mix well and Keep it aside.

STEP 2

Take all ingredients (sorse paste, green chili paste, turmeric, red chili powder, salt) and add some water to make a thick paste.

STEP 3

Steam the oil in a saucepan. Lightly fry the fish bothe side and keep aside.

STEP 4

Add kalo jira and green chillies in this remaining oil. saute for few seconds.If you think more salt is required you can add in this time.

STEP 5

Add Kalo jeera in the same pan, and saute for a few secs. After that mix, the muster paste into it. Stir for a couple of seconds. Mind it doesn’t stir for a long time because it will be better. quickly add some warm water and mix it.

STEP 6

When curry begins to boil, add the fry Ilish pcs gently into it and directly add 3 to 4 slit green chilies. Stir it lightly. Cover for a few seconds and let it cook. After a few seconds turn over the fish and the same. Remember that the gravy as it should not be too thick or dry.
Remove from the heat. Serve hot with steamed rice.
