Hey y’all!

I’m Julia Talbot, and I’m here to talk about Egyptology and Tomb of the God King, which is a book I wrote a while back and that Dreamspinner is being kind enough to re-release for me.

I love adventure tales. I love monster movies from Dracula to the Wolfman to the Mummy. I love swashbuckling like King Solomon’s Mines. I love Journey to the Center of the Earth. I’ll even watch comic book hero movies on occasion, though the wife hates them, so I watch them late at night.

When I was in my twenties (which was longer ago than I like to see on the calendars) I played a lot of tabletop roleplaying games. While I found D&D too high fantasy, and too damn complicated with the dice rolls, I adored games like Vampire, and like Call of Cthulhu. Now, I know Lovecraft can be controversial, but the idea of everyday, regular people meeting up with an elder god really appealing. Combining that with my love of campy movies (later on in life, mind you) I wrote Tomb.

Now, I have to tell you an embarrassing moment when I was writing the story. I was plugging along, nearing the end, and in a crucial scene, Christian, my British archaeologist is protesting he’ll never tell where something is under the threat of torture. But I realized too late he needed to tell for the plot to move forward. So he blurts it out.

During the beta read, my wife, fellow author BA Tortuga, looks at me, raises an eyebrow, and says, “Honey, there’s no tension. You need to at least put his eye out or something.”

That tells you all you need to know about the wife as a beta reader, but while I didn’t put out an eye, it made the book better, and it turned out to be one the ones people remember best. I’m so glad it’s getting back out there in the world!
