Fourth Letter to Runners

In the World

I awake before the alarm
I paw for it where it lays next to me in bed
There are no messages, no emails
I sit up right looking at the windows
The blinds are down but it doesn’t matter
It would be too dark to see anything

My arms push me off of the bed
I scrounge around for a pair of clean socks
They won’t match of course, a tradition
I grab a pair of worn shoes
They are indistinguishable
They are laced up tight with a loop knot

The radio is thrown into my keys pocket
It’s blasting my favorite band
Keys are tucked away next to the door
The drawstring is pulled and knotted
The pre-dawn morning is freezing
Against my bare body

The gate closes with a bang
And my feet are plodding along
My speed is fueled by the need to get warm
My breathe is heavy with the sudden effort
Though I am gone before I can see the clouds
The feeling is magical with stars above

The minutes pass as windows pass
Some dark with the day still to come
Some with life as the day has already begun
Strangers watch my form in astonishment
Nothing is wasted as my body moves
One foot in front of the other

Uneven and cracked sidewalks
Hills with crests that stubbornly hide
Dirt paths smaller than a lane
Asphalt bike trails flat and smooth
Journeys through silent homes
Jaunts through sleepy businesses

the sky turns lighter
as breathing becomes more ragged
as feet need encouragement to land true
as the mind wanders from inner focus

as the minutes and miles float by
