Further up the hill is the Vaporia District with its abundance of wealthy shipowner’s mansions looking out over the Mediterranean. Just down to the right, right by the sea, is the Asteria beach bar. This place is wonderful if you want a refreshing drink, combined with a swim, at the end of the day, but what makes it special is that on the way there, you will almost certainly pass by a large number of healthy cats, who have found different ways to sunbathe, be it lying on a sun-lounger, curled up on a bar stool, or stretched out along an improbably long length of the curving wall as it heads down to the sea.

From the Vaporia district, if you’re feeling fit, you can head up to the Ano Syros area of Ermoupolis, with its churches and the Cathedral of St George. Nearby is the Capuchin monastery of St Jean, founded as a poorhouse in 1535.
