Located on a sun terrace in Graubünden’s Albula Valley, Brienz slips a meter a year.
On Friday evening, the authorities informed the population about the latest developments in the slide area.
Evacuations cannot be ruled out for Brienz and neighboring towns.
The village in central Graubünden, with just under a hundred inhabitants, lies on a cone that has been in motion for as long as anyone can remember. These movements have increased in recent years from 30 to 50 and 70 centimeters a year. The measuring points in the village now move up to one meter per year.
The landslides of the entire village are already causing damage to buildings and lines, but this can be repaired in most cases.
Boulders from the slope above
But not only the subsoil of the village is moving. Also the whole slope on the north side above is unstable. The measuring points on the cliff edge slide down more than four meters per year.
According to experts, a possible escalation of the situation is not to be expected suddenly, but rather over several weeks or months. Nevertheless, the municipality of Albula, to which Brienz belongs, has made precautionary preparations for a possible evacuation of the village and parts of the neighboring towns of Vazerol, Surava and Tiefencastel.
