4 Tips to Make Your Talking-Head Videos More Engaging and Natural

Talking-head videos are an important part of any video marketing strategy. Whether you’re introducing a new product, talking about an offer or delivering some training, you’ll have to use talking-head videos. Most videos of this type are robotic and don’t connect with the audience in a meaningful way.

Here are some tips you can use to make your talking-head videos more natural and engaging.

  1. Don’t memorize your material.

Unless you’re a standup comic who’s spent several months perfecting a bit to the point that it seems natural even when it isn’t, don’t try to memorize your material. If you’re reading from a prompter or regurgitating some rehearsed material, your audience will know.

Instead, just create a broad outline for the things you’re going to talk about once the cameras start rolling. You can have a mental map of the transitions you’re going to make from subject to subject. As a result, your delivery will feel more natural because you’re just riffing on the subject matter.

  1. Use a hook to connect with your audience.

Nobody likes to hear a word-for-word recitation of a listicle (list article) in video form. If you’re going to use a video to communicate your message, make sure you find a way to connect with your audience. Include a personal story or an anecdote. Make your viewers perform an exercise with you. Ask your audience a question and wait a few seconds while they mull it over in their heads.

You need to be informative, but there’s no need to be bland while you’re doing it. If you’re having fun and speaking from a place of authenticity, your viewers will be much more responsive to your message.

  1. Don’t pretend to be an expert.

If the subject of a video is something you’re not knowledgeable about, don’t step in front of the camera. Have someone on your team who truly is an expert be the focus of the video. You can bring in an expert on the topic and interview them. This way, you still get to be in the video, and your viewers get the information they need.

Don’t try to fake it. Your viewers will know.

  1. Speak in a conversational manner.

If you’ve ever listened to a presidential speech, you know how unnatural it sounds. Does the president talk like that behind closed doors? Of course not. You should keep this in mind when you’re recording a talking-head segment. Look into the camera directly. Make eye contact with your audience and talk to them like you would to a friend or a colleague. There’s no reason to use weird intonations or deliver a soliloquy.

Talking-head videos are a great way to infuse your personality into the message you are trying to convey. But if you aren’t careful, your delivery could come off as unnatural or forced. Use the aforementioned tips to take your talking-head videos to the next level.
