While on a recent trip, I visited Kirby Lonsdale and saw an information board with a QR Code and NFC chip displayed as part of the sign.

This was at Devils Bridge and as somebody who favours audio-visual over reading paragraphs of text, I found this very useful. I may have missed them in other places, but this is the first sign of its type that I have seen. I thought it was a really good idea so I decided to share it here on the blog.

Phones with QR readers and NFC readers are becoming commonplace. Combined with good phone internet this can provide a rich multimedia experience for visitors. This does not really need to be limited to beauty spots. With a little imagination, you could apply the principle to any public area, visitor attraction or information board. Essentially, QR codes and NFC chips can direct people quickly and easily to any multimedia content.

The one at Devil’s bridge is an audio narration of the scary myth of how the Devil appeared and left his hand print on the bridge.

You can listen by scanning the QR code below. Alternatively, do it the old-fashioned way using the web address.

You will be presented with a page Telling the story of the bridge. They have also used this as a handy way to provide additional information about the town and request donations.

I don’t know why there are not more of these. They are relatively easy, cost-effective to create and long-lasting. You can use voice-over, stock music, SFX, as well as photos and video footage.
