Vlogging vs Filmmaking

Filmmaking has been around for over a century, way back to when films were silent and shot in black and white. The term is synonymous with Hollywood, however, Film-making is no longer just for film producers with big budgets; everybody with a smartphone has the capability of making a film.

The term Vlog is now widely used too, but this is essentially film-making too.

Vlog (video log) is derived from blog, the term given to people who publish written content online. Blog came from weblog. As a progression of blogging some people started talking into a camera instead (or as well as) writing content. From this, the term Vlogging became used.

YouTube is the biggest platform for this with some Vloggers now earning huge incomes and having audiences in the millions.

Traditionally, film production was something that was planned, scripted, shot in scenes and edited together to produce a slick final film, whereas a vlog was originally an individual talking to camera.

However, some vloggers content is now indistinguishable from the content of professional film-makers. With affordable equipment at higher resolution and accessible editingsoftware there are some very accomplished vloggers / film-makers out there that produce high-end content using techniques of pro filmmakers.

So, I guess the term vlogger and filmmaker should be interchangeable in terms of the quality of the content. The main difference would be that a vlogger is producing regular content, around a general theme, typically several times a week. Whereas filmmakers are probably involved in lots of one-off film productions.

That is my opinion, what is yours? Feel free to leave a comment and share.

As an example, here is a great little film made by Vlogger KSI. It contains some bad language but is very funny.
