With Netflix investing $6bn into 1000 hours of original content it is clear that creating compelling high quality film content is pretty costly.

That is an equivalent of $6,000,000 per finished hour. It makes the amounts we charge for music licensing, sound effects, voice over services and audio Production pale into insignificance when you look at it like that.

It is always difficult to price media production jobs in a competitive and crowded market. However, pricing realistically and maintaining the value in the service is important if we are to retain the quality and professionalism that people expect. Clients should expect to pay decent money for a good service; sometimes it seems to me that clients don’t account for the time, work and years of experience it takes to get professional results. Budgets always need to reflect this in my opinion.

Given that Netflix will be creating a range of genres, some less costly than others, the $6,000,000 per hour is actually quite cost effective especially when you consider that some of their action series are like Hollywood movies. According to Google the average cost of producing a Movie is $65 million for typically a 2 hour movie so in context to that the Netflix budget is relatively small.
