Standard Wool supports BWMB’s Sheep Shearing Courses

This week, Standard Wool’s Group Managing Director Paul Hughes Snr, swapped his suit for shears at the Worshipful Company of Woolmen event in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

BWMB

Paul Hughes Snr joined experienced personnel from the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) at the event which was being held to coincide with the Great Yorkshire Show.

The event was organised by Master Woolman Alderman Peter Hewitt to educate and instruct Liverymen on how to sheer sheep and partake in an ‘on farm’ wool shearing appreciation forum.

Paul Hughes Snr of Standard Wool

Standard Wool’s Paul Hughes Snr has worked in the wool industry for 29 years and joined the Livery in 1994. His commitment to the industry over a prolonged period of change, most notable in Bradford, is honourable.

“It was a great privilege to finally get the opportunity to shear a sheep,” Paul told www.standardwoolnews.co.uk.

“I would like to thank the experienced team at BWMB and congratulate the Alderman Peter Hewitt for putting on an enjoyable afternoon. It is particularly important that we support the BWMB and their world class shearing courses which ensure that the highest shearing practices are adopted.”

Worshipful Company of Woolmen

The Worshipful Company of Woolmen is one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City of London and can trace its roots back to 1180.

Originally, it acted as the body that oversaw woolpackers and wool merchants to ensure consistent standards for wool producers and wool merchants throughout the wool industry. It now combines its ancient history and traditions with an active role with the $80 billion Global Wool Pipeline Industries through its City Wool Project linking the City of London Financial and professional sectors with the global industry.

Equally importantly is its Charitable Trust which supports research into appropriate wool related procedures and practices; provides bursaries for students of wool, textile, design, wool marketing and retailing and it awards prizes and medals for sheep shearing at the major agricultural shows.

It works closely with its three Strategic Wool Industry Partners, The British Wool Marketing Board, the Australian Woolmark Company and the Campaign for Wool which has His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales as Patron. Through careful evolution, over 800 years, the Woolmen’s Company has maintained its unique traditions whilst maintaining close emotional and business affiliations with a modern, vibrant and very environmentally friendly fibre.
