So you think knitting isn’t cool?

Many people would argue that the words ‘knitting’ and ‘cool’ should never be used in the same sentence. This is for two reasons: first, when you’re wearing wool knits you’re always warm, so you’re never cool… Second, the activity of knitting isn’t often associated with a heightened social status…

Unlikely Scenario:

Friend: “you wanna hang out tonight, maybe go to the local for a few”

Self-proclaimed knitter: “actually, I was going to catch up on my knitting”

Friend: “oh sweet, that’s cool, I’d love to join”

However!!

Two expert knitters would strongly disagree, and are trying to change people’s perceptions about knitting. The knitters – Jade Harwood and Aurelie Popper studied Textile Design at the infamous Saint Martins, and have since worked for Alexander McQueen and Balmain. Now, they use wool to knit their fashionable garments, with the sole aim of inspiring future generations to make their own clothes with natural materials.

Harwood and Popper are not the only ones that see the value of knitting. For example, it is now common for universities to have knitting societies, where students can deal with their revision stress by attending a relaxing hour of knitting! Also, it is well documented that surgeons, who require skilled manual dexterity, often gain this skill by knitting!

There are many benefits to people making their own clothes, especially out of natural materials like wool. For example, wool is biodegradable and therefore a more sustainable alternative to synthetic fabrics – read HERE to learn more.

Furthermore, wool is at the height of fashion during winter! As temperatures drop, shops stock up on ‘Granddad jumpers’ that always increase in popularity as the frosty winter weather sets in. Besides, who doesn’t love a Christmas jumper? Especially when charities such as Save The Children raise money every year through their Christmas jumper sales!

So, next time you think of knitting being ‘just for grannies’, think again! And if you’re still not convinced here’s a Christmas related knitting joke:

Why are Christmas trees bad at knitting?

Because they keep dropping their needles!

So why not give it a go? You never know, this time next year, you might be knitting your Granny a pair of socks, rather than the other way round!

Standard Wool have been trading wool for centuries.
