Olympians sport wool clothing

In a photo-shoot with GQ magazine, two British, medal-winning Olympians have been raising awareness for the use of wool sportswear.

Mark Cavendish, MBE and Louis Smith, MBE, both won silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, helping Great Britain to an incredible 2nd place finish.

Mark Cavendish is a champion road cyclist who won the 2011 Sports Personality of the Year. Whilst Louis Smith – an artistic gymnast boasts a Strictly Come Dancing win in 2012… I’ll leave you to decide which is the more impressive accomplishment…

The Woolmark Company – one of the most recognised and respected brands in the wool industry – organised a photo-shoot of the athletes with GQ magazine in order to promote awareness for ‘wool power’. The photographer – Matthew Shave snapped the athletes who were dressed in wool sportswear made by designers such as Ralph Lauren.

Wool is becoming the material of choice for many different sporting garments. This is due to the natural qualities of wool perfectly suiting an athletes lifestyle. For example, wool remains odourless for a significantly longer time than many other synthetic fabrics, which is perfect for those doing intense exercise. Moreover, wool fabric has evaporative cooling properties, keeping your body cool in sweaty conditions.

Wool sportswear is also becoming increasingly fashionable on the high-street. For example, the adidas Ultra Boost is a running sneaker that’s popularity surged after Kanye West was seen sporting them at a basketball game. These shoes utilise the breathable, yet warm properties of wool to create a stylish and practical sneaker.

This increase in popularity, as well as the advertising from companies such as Woolmark is highly beneficial to the wool industry. Journalist Amy McCosker wrote an article earlier today for ABC Rural stating that “wool prices have hit their highest levels in five years thanks, in part, to fashion companies experimenting with the fibre”.

So whether you’re a baaasketballer, a shearleader, or just need a new fleece of life, why not consider wool clothing?
