Responsible Wool Standard gets industry following

The Textile Exchange’s Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) which started in February 2014 has made quick gains within the International textile industry, with support from many leading fashion brands, wool suppliers and growers committing already to the RWS.

Welfare

The RWS Standard is an independent, voluntary standard. On farms, the certification ensures that sheep are treated with respect to their Five Freedoms and also ensures best practices in the management and protection of the land. Through the processing stages, certification ensures that wool from certified farms is properly identified and tracked.

The goals of the RWS are to provide the industry with a tool to recognize the best practices of farmers; ensuring that wool comes from farms with a progressive approach to managing their land, and from sheep that have been treated responsibly.

The standard will create an industry benchmark to drive improvements in animal care and land management where needed and provide a robust chain of custody system from farm to final product so that consumers are confident that the wool in the products they choose is truly RWS.

Textile Exchange Mission

Textile Exchange inspires and equips people to accelerate sustainable practices in the textile value chain. They focus on minimising the harmful impacts of the global textile industry and maximising its positive effects.

Incorporated in 2002, Textile Exchange works closely with its members and textile industry stakeholders along the entire $1.7 trillion value cycle. TE is headquartered in the US with staff and ambassadors in eight countries.

Standard Wool’s Group Trading Director, Paul Hughes said: “The Responsible Wool Standard is a unique approach with strong backing already from Industry leaders which aims at addressing important issues in Wool Growing, and we are keen to learn more about the Standard in order to further strengthen our commitments to Animal Welfare”
