Learn how wool can help prevent heat loss in your home

Standard Wool supplies a myriad of industries with wool every year from carpet manufacturers to the clothing industry, but did you know that wool is also used to prevent heat loss in thousands of homes?

Chimney draughts

Chimney Sheep is a UK-based company which uses wool to manufacturer draught excluders for chimneys.

Older properties in the UK with open fireplaces are potentially costing homeowners hundreds of pounds each year as a result of heat loss.

Chimney Sheep is an innovative draught excluder which prevents heat loss and helps save energy in the home.

With the winter months just around the corner, wool has natural, heat saving properties which provide excellent insulation.

Insulation

Throughout their time on earth, sheep have been able to adapt to some of the harshest environments. Their wool protects them through the hot and dry seasons as well as providing insulation through the cold and damp.

Wool is a natural, environmentally friendly product which keeps hot air in during the winter and lets it out during the summer; it has breathability!

Advantages of using wool:

  • Renewable
  • Sustainable
  • Wool fibres are safe and breathable
  • More efficient than man-made counterparts
  • Naturally saves energy

The Chimney Sheep was selected by Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud as his ‘Green Hero’ during his search for the 10 best eco-innovations on the market. He told industrytoday.co.uk:

“Sheep wool is insulating, durable and naturally hygroscopic – absorbing and releasing moisture slowly. That’s what makes it ideal as a chimney stop. Any home with one chimney will lose 4% of its energy up the hole, so it makes simple, obvious sense to block the flue and insulate the blockage at the same time.”

What else is wool used for?

Aside from the obvious products such as clothing and carpets, there are a number of unusual items that use wool.

For example, did you know that house bricks are now being produced using wool? Seawood and wool is being combined to help reinforce bricks, this process is less toxic than traditional alternatives and stronger.
