Troubled sheep farmers are set to receive much need funds following the launch of a new initiative by farming charity The Addington Fund.

The money will be raised by fellow sheep farmers who will donate live animals through auction markets around England and Wales.

The Addington Fund specialises in offering support to farmers in desperate need of housing or emergency funds. It has worked closely with the Livestock Auctioneers Association Council to formulate the new scheme and make sure that it’s viable and efficient on busy auction days.

Tup 1 Ewe (the scheme’s title) allows sheep farmers attending auctions to nominate the sale of proceeds of ewes or lambs to the charity.

“Farmers can donate a ewe and lamb or lambs or they can give the progeny of the ewe as a store or finished lamb,” explained Ian Bell, Chief Executive, the Addington Fund, to farminguk.co.uk.

“The proceeds will then be sent to the Addington Fund direct from the auctioneer and the funds raised will support farming families in the region of the market.”

Farmers visiting auctions over the coming months should look out for details or ask their auctioneer ahead of the event to see how they can help.

Livestock farmers have been incredibly supportive of The Addington Fund since its inception and the charity believes that this scheme offers a new and unique method of giving money to a worthy and much needed cause.

The charity predominately uses its donations to find housing for farmers who are forced to leave their homes, however in some counties they also offer affordable housing to anyone currently working in, or retired from, an agricultural or a land based industry.

Although Standard Wool can’t directly donate, as a company which relies heavily upon the UK farming industry it’s pleased to see the work of the charity and the generous nature of the country’s farmers.
