The Campaign for Wool tours Scotland!

The #WoolTour organised by the Campaign for Wool was a four-day road trip across Scotland celebrating the work of artisans, makers, outfitters and manufacturers.

Textiles

The Scottish textiles industry is worth over £840m per year to the UK’s economy and has some high profile supporters, including Prince Charles who hosted the largest and most prestigious gathering of wool experts in the UK to conclude the tour.

The tour began on Sunday 4th September and finished on Friday with the conference at Dumfries House.

Tour diary

Day 1

The tour began with the ‘Wanderful Wool Tour’ which stopped off at ten of Glasgow’s finest establishments. There was also a pop-up Shetland wool installation and music provided from Rebecca Vasmant in the final venue.

Day 2

Bright and early on Monday morning the tour headed to Bute Fabrics, the island’s weavers are well known for their bright, wool-rich tweed. On its return from the island the tour met Ange Sewell, a hand weaver who runs workshops from her studio in West Kilbride.

Day 3

Tuesday proved to be a busy day starting at the internationally renowned Dovecot Tapestry Studio before a visit to tweed outfitters Walker Slater. The day concluded at Peebles Office meeting fine, worsted cloth merchants Holland and Sherry.

Day 4

The tour visited Schofield Dyers and Finishers and Eribe on day four. Eribe is one of the largest hand knitting businesses in Europe which has been in production for over 30 years. The day ended with a visit to new Merino performance cycling brand Findra who are making waves with their highly desirable range of gear for women.

Day 5

The tour made it ways to Dumfries for the Wool conference, where experts discussed the most pressing issues and opportunities for the wool industry.

Day 6

Prince Charles hosted the highly prestigious and UK’s largest wool conference which was attended by the likes of:

  • Steve Rowe – Marks & Spencer CEO
  • Sir Paul Smith – British designer
  • David Gandy – Fashion Model (pictured above with Prince Charles at the conference)

Some of the topics covered on the day included animal welfare, sustainability and quality, environmental issues and the role wool can play in slowing down fast-fashion.
