CyrusOne Successfully Audits as Compliant with the Terms of the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact

At Cyrusone, we have long recognised that transparency is central to achieving our sustainability goals – as a company, for our sector, as well as society at large. The creation of the European Climate Neutral Data Center Pact audit tool in December 2022 was a significant step in establishing a culture of transparency within our industry and one which was welcomed by CyrusOne and our peers.

Following this, we are delighted to announce that CyrusOne is among the first of the signatories to successfully audit as compliant with the terms of the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact (CNDPR). The CNDPR sets stringent targets for environmental performance and sustainability goals in five key areas covering energy efficiency, use of green power, water use, recycling and reuse of waste heat. Collectively meeting these targets will ensure data centres are climate neutral by 2030.

Even prior to the launch of the CNDPR audit tool, we have prioritized analyses and auditing to ensure we are providing visibility on how we are progressing in our sustainability commitments.  For instance, in our 2022 Sustainability Report, we announced that we had achieved 100% renewable power for our facilities in London, Dublin, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. This led to 2022 being our first full calendar year of climate-neutral operation.

In addition to this, we provided a detailed overview on our water consumption status, as well as our increased usage of renewable energy.

With the digital world continuing to evolve and dominate how we live and work, the demand and necessity of data centres is ever increasing. Statista recently forecasted that revenue in the data centre market is set to reach over £280bn in 2023, proving this demand isn’t slowing down anytime soon. This makes the necessary sustainability targets set by the industry even more important. We welcome any further standardisation of audible reporting within the industry to drive even more transparency in the market.

While we have completed the CNDPR audit, we are aware that we are never ‘finished’ in evaluating and improving upon our performance. For instance, we are pleased that 24/7 carbon-matching will become a requirement with companies having to track their power usage on an hourly basis and match their usage to a carbon free energy source. This will also result in a move away from carbon offsetting and toward PPAs, directly with green energy generators.

This will continue to be an ongoing focus as we strive to be the ‘gold standard’ in demonstrating verifiable environmental credentials and inspire others in our industry and beyond.
