Latest liquid cooling tech makes solid impact at CyrusOne’s Lebanon facility

When you think about data centers, you probably imagine a giant industrial space filled with countless racks of servers, blinking lights and miles of wiring. But few envision things like density and Heat.

CyrusOne does. Customers increasingly want to boost their server density per square foot within the racks to maximize their compute power. But this heavier compute in a smaller square footage means the heat the servers generate also rises. We need to cool down the environment in more creative and sustainable ways in high-density configurations to ensure connectivity never wanes.

We’ve tapped the latest cooling design solutions across our campuses. The technology, coupled with CyrusOne’s standard cooling design, fosters simple deployment and low power usage effectiveness (PUE), the latest effort for the company’s goal to achieve the highest level of sustainability.

Data Centers have traditionally used evaporative cooling, but liquid is 4,000 times better than air at storing and transferring this heat emission. CyrusOne preplans for these technologies in all data center builds. This includes installing taps for water deployments, which can be used for in-row cooling, liquid to cabinet, liquid to chip, and immersion.

One CyrusOne customer uses 12 direct liquid cooling systems in our Lebanon, Ohio, data center north of Cincinnati. A Heat Exchanger removes the heat from the server and transfers it to the building’s chilled water. Two hoses connect the server to a manifold. One hose supplies water to absorb the residual heat, the other returns the water to the heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to the main building supply, then is cooled back down.

In layman’s terms, the water goes from our closed loop chiller to the heat exchanger, a separate loop goes from the heat exchanger to the manifold, from the manifold to each individual server, then back to the manifold and back to the heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to the facility closed loop. The only stipulation is the water that leaves the heat exchanger and goes over to the manifold must stay 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above the facility’s dew point.

This type of cooling system helps tremendously with cost and efficiency, allowing customers to have the density they require while allowing us to cool the dense heat generated using our building’s closed-loop water chilling system. And we waste no water in the process.
