Is A Tire Patch Or Plug Better?

If you have run over a nail or other type of road debris, you may suddenly have a flat Tire. But before you replace the tire, you should check to see if it can be repaired. Many times, if the puncture wound is small and clean, the hole can be repaired and you can avoid the costs associated with having to buy a new tire. There are two ways to repair holes in tires. This includes a patch or a plug. Here is a bit of information about both of these tire repair options and which is better in various situation.

Tire Plug

A tire plug involves injecting a fluid that expands into the hole. As the fluid begins to expand, it hardens and turns into a rubber-like substance. Since it expands, it plugs the hole completely, sealing it off.

Tire plugs are only ideal to use when the hole is not along the wall of the tire. If the hole is along the wall, a tire plug cannot be used, as it increases the likelihood of you having a blowout in the future. Tire plugs are most often used by towing and roadside auto repair services. The fluid can be injected into a tire if you are stranded on the side of the road. The tire does not even have to be removed. It sets quickly, helping you to get back on the road faster.

Tire Patch

A tire patch involves placing a patch over the hole, much like you would patch an inflatable pool or object. The patch helps to prevent air from seeping out of the tire.

Tire patches are typically more durable than tire plugs and they can be used anywhere on the tire, including the walls. However, in order for a patch to be properly placed, the tire should be removed. As such, this method is typically used by auto repair and tire repair shops who have the time and space to safely remove a tire, patch it and then reinstall the tire.
