Q&A: Hear From Two Healthcare IT Professionals in Honor of IT Professionals Day!

Today, on September 19, 2023, as we mark Healthcare IT Professionals’ Day, we are thrilled to honor the remarkable individuals who are powering positive outcomes on the tech side of healthcare. Keep reading for insights from two outstanding professionals in the field: Brenda, an Allscripts analyst, and Mostak, an Epic analyst.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in Healthcare IT?

Brenda, Allscripts Analyst:

“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to work in the medical field. It wasn’t until after completing 2 Bachelor’s and a Master’s that I realized that I could combine my love of the medical field WITH my IT knowledge. 13 years ago I took a position as a consultant and never looked back!”

Mostak, Epic Analyst:

“My parents wanted me to become a doctor. but I grew up being interested in computer technologies. When I completed my Bachelor’s in computer information systems, I got the opportunity to apply for an IT analyst role at Kaiser Permanente. My parents’ inspiration definitely worked for my career path. That’s how I started in the Healthcare IT. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic taught us lessons about the importance of technologies to keep healthcare-related medical records to improve patient care. Because of the Healthcare IT system, we were able to control the spread of Covid 19. It helped save lives. This pandemic-related experience emboldened my commitment to Healthcare IT.”

Q: How do you stay updated with the latest technology trends in your specialty?

Brenda, Allscripts Analyst:

“I belong to several blogs, LinkedIn, and CMS.gov to stay current with technological news, advances, and updates.”

Mostak, Epic Analyst:

“I read and research Healthcare IT-related news and articles. I follow trends & discussions related to my IT specialty. Which is Epic Healthcare software. I use LinkedIn professional social media to stay in contact with other Healthcare IT professionals & recruiters. Recently, I have seen AI integration in patient care topic is getting momentum. This is exciting!”

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in your Healthcare IT specialty?

Brenda, Allscripts Analyst:

“Sometimes you have to start at the bottom. For IT, it was important for me to take a position as a customer service rep to understand the basics of troubleshooting and problem-solving. 2. Become a “sponge” for knowledge. If coworkers want to share knowledge, take advantage of it! 3. Ask questions! 4. Take initiative- work extra, volunteer to be a part of projects, etc. ”

Mostak, Epic Analyst:

“There are needs for more Healthcare IT skilled resources. Create your goals & objectives. Reach out to Healthcare IT recruiters and review your current skills and interests that closely match available Healthcare IT roles. Take additional IT trainings to enhance your skills & marketability. Network with other Healthcare IT professionals and ask questions. Follow their advice to accomplish your goals & objectives.”

BONUS: If your specialty in Healthcare IT had its own theme song, what would it be, and why?

Brenda, Allscripts Analyst:

“I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. There are always curveballs, so be prepared, but know that YOU WILL SURVIVE!”

Mostak, Epic Analyst:

“Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees”
