Since the very beginning, human-computer interaction involves human using devices as input.

They include things like keyboard, mouse and trackpad, touchscreen, joystick, gamepad, microphone, barcode scanner, biometric scanner, eye tracker, motion sensor, and lots more.

The goal is to improve usability, and how computers can precisely understand users' intention, through the use of computational artifacts, systems, and infrastructures.

This time, humanity has again evolved, and advances human-computer interaction by introducing a new way to control a computer.

Neuralink Corp. is an American neurotechnology company owned by billionaire Elon Musk that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), has began planting a device capable of reading the brain activity, and helps Noland Arbaugh move the cursor on a computer without using any physical tools.

And he uses it to create a post on X, "just by thinking".

Arbaugh, who is the world's first Neuralink patient, is a 29-year-old man paralyzed after a "freak accident" in 2016.

At that time, he was working as a summer camp counsellor for children when he got into an accident, which dislocated his C4 and C5 spinal vertebrae, and this made him a quadriplegic.

"I'm paralyzed from below the shoulders. I have no sensation or movement below my level of injury, so below my shoulders," he said.

Neuralink is a brain technology startup founded by Elon Musk.

It has a goal of working with patients who have severe physical limitations like cervical spinal cord impairment or quadriplegia.

The company's goal is to connect human brains to computers to help tackle complex neurological conditions.

With Neuralink's Telepathy implant in his brain, Arbaugh demonstrated his ability to "telepathically" move a cursor on a computer screen.

"Twitter banned me because they thought I was a bot, and @X and @elonmusk reinstated me because I am,'' he joked.

Before he created this post, Arbaugh showed that he could control music, and even play a game of chess.

He can also telepathically play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

What's especially impressive about the demo is that, Arbaugh has a pretty impressive control, directing his racer not just to turn but how far to turn, suggesting a fine degree of analog control dexterity. For example, he was able to shoot another player down during the demo video.

"I am so happy to be part of it," said a visibly grateful and giddy Arbaugh at the Neuralink meeting.

"I am so blessed to be part of it."

He can also play a more complex game, like Civilization VI.

Through threads that are only several micrometers thick that read his brain activities via electrodes, Arbaugh explained that he simply imagines the cursor moving where he wants it to go and it does.

"It's something I haven't been able to do much the last few years, especially not like this," he said. "Now it's all being done with my brain. You can see the cursor moving around the screen, that's all me."

"It's all brain-powered," he said before explaining how he imagines where the cursor should go and how it follows his thoughts.

Arbaugh likened the technology to using the force from Star Wars.

''I had given up playing that game," he said, referring to the game Civilization VI, "You all (Neuralink) gave me the ability to do that again and played for 8 hours straight."

As an avid gamer, Arbaugh couldn't be happier.

"I had basically given up on playing that game," he said in the video. "I just wasn't really able to play it as much as I wanted to and you all gave me that ability again."

Arbaugh undergone the surgery procedure back in January, which went smoothly.

"The surgery was super easy," Arbaugh said. "I literally was released from the hospital a day later. I have no cognitive impairments."

However, Arbaugh said the technology is "not perfect" and they "have run into some issues," and that there is "still work to be done" to refine the technology.

Regardless, he expressed support for the implant in dramatically improving his quality of life.
