Bella Thorne Intentionally Leaked Her Own Nude Photos To ‘Take The Power Back' After Threats From Hacker

15/06/2019

Being a celebrity is hard work.

Because celebrities are bankable individuals, famous people are paid handsomely for the work, and that due to their star power, they also enjoy many good things in life, including the privilege to meet, attend, and also work with other famous people.

But the perks of being popular is that, they also have little to no privacy.

In most of their time on screen and on media, these people work by portraying themselves at their very best and in perfection. But just like everyone else, celebrities also have personal lives they want to keep discreet.

It's only on their private and personal moments, that celebrities can hope to enjoy more normal lives, like everyone else. And this is one of the biggest reasons why anything involving celebrities' personal lives is very sought-after by the public.

Before the internet, the only way they can enjoy privacy is when they're inside their homes. But thanks to the internet, the world can invade past the front gate, and even into the bedroom.

Bella Thorne

Annabella Avery Thorne, or best known as Bella Thorne, was born in October 8, 1997. The American actress, singer, and writer has received several awards and accolades, including the Imagen Award.

Her works include Blended, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, The Babysitter, Amityville: The Awakening, Infamous and more.

As a famous person, Bella is indeed a prime target of hackers, who wish to gain insight into her personal life.

And this time, a hacker managed to hack into Bella's account, and stole a number of her nude photos.

Taking advantage of the situation, the hacker then threatened Bella, hoping that they can extort something from the former Disney star.

But Bella, recognized for holding a controversial public image, isn't falling for that demand.

Instead of succumbing to the threats, the actress leaked the photos, which include a mirror selfie of her while topless, and close up photos of her breasts and pierced nipples, which are the same photos the hackers claimed to have stolen.

She did this to threaten the hacker back, in retaliation to hacker's blackmail attempt.

"I feel gross. I feel watched, I feel someone has taken something from me that I only wanted one special person to see," she wrote at the time, adding that she was releasing the pictures because "it's MY DECISION" and "NOW U DON'T GET TO TAKE YET ANOTHER THING FROM ME."

It didn't take long until the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Joseph O'Connor, a 22-year-old from the UK, had been apprehended by National Police in Spain and has been charged with multiple complaints, including cyberstalking and the intent to extort Bella Thorne.

"I want to thank the FBI for searching tirelessly for the person who made my life and others a living hell," Thorne wrote on Instagram.

"I have felt violated many times in my life, but I thought I didn’t have a way out, so I made a choice… A choice I didn’t want to make but felt I had to because I wouldn’t spend another day feeling someone was taking away from me my body, my soul, my mental health, and my love and hope for the world."

"I took my power back," she said.

When she learned about her suspected hacker's arrest, Thorne said she "woke up with hope again, and a weight lifted off my shoulders."

But this didn't end the controversy.

"For the people who think 'she deserves it' because she was there or had a beer in her hand or wore a short skirt, and for the people that think because she took the photo she deserves to be humiliated with it - and she deserves for everyone to look at it and inscribe every piece and bit of her in their mind. Or because she took the photo, she deserves that one moment to follow her, taunt her for the rest of her life through every waking moment. To those who made those remarks, they were disgusting. I hope you feel disgusting. To those few people. Sincerely (expletive) you," she said.

The case also caught the attention of the famous television personality Whoopi Goldberg.

"If you're famous, I don't care how old you are. You don't take nude pictures of yourself," Whoopi said.

"When they are hacking you, they are hacking all of your stuff. So whether it's one picture or a million pictures, once you take that picture, it goes into the cloud and it's available to any hacker who wants it and if you don't know that in 2019, that is an issue. I'm sorry. Your age does not – you don't get to do that. You don't get to do it."

Upon hearing this, Bella struck back, and accused Whoopi of victim-blaming.

I'm not gonna lie, I wanna say that I feel pretty disgusting.

You know, I feel pretty disgusting, Whoopie, knowing that everyone has seen my shit. And I just wanna say that me watching this interview made me feel really bad about myself and I hope you're happy. I really do. I hope you're so fucking happy, because I can only imagine all of the kids who have their shit released and then they commit suicide.

You're so crazy for thinking such terrible things on such an awful situation. I don't really wanna go on The View anymore because I don't really wanna be beaten down by a bunch of older women for my body and my sexuality.

I don't really feel like that.

So, I'm gonna cancel my interview because I don't really want you guys talking about your views to young girls because I would not want my daughter to learn that and I would never say that to her. OK, I'm done. Shame. On. You. Whoopi. Shame on you. And shame on you for putting that public opinion just out there like that for every young girl to think that they're disgusting for even taking a photo like that.

Shame on you.

Saying if you take a sexy photo then it basically deserves to get leaked, like, don't be surprised at all and don't feel sorry for yourself. So, if I go out to a party drinking and I wanna dance on the dance floor, do I deserve to be raped too? Because to me, I see those two things as really fucking similar.

Bella's fellow actresses came to her aid on social media.

In one Instagram post, Thorne said Zendaya "called me today to make sure I was ok, we talked a lot about this generation, the one before us as well, and how as women we shouldn’t feel bad about ourselves our bodies."

Bella follows some other famous celebrities who had their privacy violated as a result of hacking.

Years before this, a slew of famous women – including Jennifer Lawrence, Aubrey Plaza and Kate Upton – had their private photos hacked and shared online.

"Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this," Jennifer once said, in an interview at the time her photos were shared. "It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting."
