'Mortal Kombat 1' Combos Being Too Long That Players Are 'Getting Married' While They Wait

28/09/2023

Mortal Kombat is a popular fighting game franchise that has been around since 1992.

The game is considered one of the longest-running and oldest fighting game franchises out there. Through iconic characters, brutal combat styles and graphic violence, the games from the franchise have been a staple for many gamers for more than one generation.

Back in the early 1990s when the first Mortal Kombat game was released by Ed Boon and John Tobias, most fighting games primarily relied on basic attacks and special moves. However, Mortal Kombat took things to the next level by allowing players to string together a series of moves and attacks, creating devastating combo sequences. This added a layer of depth and strategy to the gameplay that was quite innovative at the time.

31 years later, Mortal Kombat 1 is released, and one character in particular has a combo that is much longer than it should.

As shared in on Twitter, the sorcerer character Shang Tsung is seen fighting the Tarkatan Baraka.

Traditionally, combos only last a few seconds, and create a sustainable amount of damage.

But here, through exceptional skills in delivering the Flaming Skull Eruption move, combos and and effective use of 'Kameos', the player playing the Shang Tsung character managed to pull off an astonishing 89-hit combo to his Tarkatan opponent.

The combo in question makes use of a Mortal Kombat feature, which allows players to hit opponent while their in mid air.

From start to finish. the combo lasts about a minute.

Even when the opponent takes a drastically less damage as the combo goes on due to damage being heavily mitigated, the sheer amount of time the opponent is caught in the air makes it almost impossible for the opponent to do anything but wait.

And making it even more annoying, by receiving less damage, means that the meter is also building up slowly.

What this means in Mortal Kombat 1, despite receiving less damage, the opponent cannot build enough meter to break the combo.

"This is actually busted. Not because of damage. But because of how long the combo is. The round is gonna be over by the time I touch the ground. And the fact that the opponent only builds a little over one bar of meter for getting hit by it due to scaling is ridiculous," said an X user.

Typically, a single round in a tournament of Mortal Kombat lasts about 99 seconds.

When the one minute-long Shang Tsung combo went viral, people decided to make a joke out of it, like saying that they would would put down their controllers the moment they get hit.

Some also joked that they can make dinner, do their taxes, getting married, and living a fulfilling life, and are still waiting for the combo to finish.

It's worth nothing though, that the Shang Tsung combo isn't the only combo that is too long.

Players have discovered that in Mortal Kombat 1 combos can be carried out for a ludicrously long time, and this has led to a number of complaints from the community.

“This is great for drinking adult beverages. Once I see Raiden, Scorpion, Smoke, Johnny, Baraka, or even Lei Mei, Kitana get the chain going, I get to sit back and relax and take a sip and provide A1 commentary of how I’m getting smacked. Insanely long chains are annoying, however, I’m impressed with the dedication and memory some people have.” a Reddit user joked.

From here, it can be concluded that in Mortal Kombat, when combos are too short or difficult to pull off, players will often feel unsatisfied with how much they’re rewarded for catching an opponent off-guard or mixing them up. But if they’re too long, then the game can feel noninteractive and one-note.

It's also worth noting that the complaints didn't come from the majority of players, and that not everyone hates the combo length.

This leaves a place for debate in the community.

Mortal Kombat 1 follows the character Liu Kang, who became the God of Fire at the end of Mortal Kombat 11.

Having won the previous tournament, Lord Liu Kang, the Protector of Earthrealm, became the Keeper of Time, and restarted history.

He neutralized the threats and dangers that had come before, crafting a New Era in which all beings would have the opportunity to find peace. But that peace is threatened by an enemy that Liu Kang has not anticipated.

While Mortal Kombat received strong reception both critically and commercially, with longtime fans of the series and newcomers alike praising the game upon its launch, many also complained about the studios decision to hire celebrities, that include Hollywood actress Megan Fox and retired wrestler-turned actor Bautista.
