Facebook Supports Multiple Personal Profiles, Allowing Users To Have Alternate Accounts

The internet is vast, and as people become accustomed to social media to socialize, alter egos begins to thrive.

After all, there are times when people may wish to have different identities on social media to connect with different group of people or audience. People also create different profiles on social media to express different aspects of themselves, to cope with personal issues, maintain privacy, experiment with different identities, and so forth.

For all this time, Facebook users who own different personal accounts have to log out from one account to log in to the other one to use it.

But with an update, "you can now have Multiple Personal Profiles on Facebook," said Meta in a website post.

"You can now create multiple personal profiles to organize your experience on Facebook – think one profile for the foodie scene you love and another one to keep up with your friends and family."

"Each profile will have a unique Feed with relevant content and you can easily switch in between profiles without having to log in."

For whatever reasons users choose to have different profiles, "you may want to keep your personal and professional relationships separate, or you may want to keep one profile tied to a community you’re a part of and another profile just for friends."

By creating multiple profiles, users of Facebook can easily control their multiple profiles in one place, allowing them to organize who they share with and what content they see for the various parts of their lives.

"Think one profile for the foodie scene you love and another one to keep up with your friends and family," said Meta.

While Facebook has already offered the controls needed for users to choose what audience they're sharing with, being logged in to multiple profiles was not possible in one Facebook session, unless one profile is personal, and the other one is business.

" [...] but after experimenting with multiple profiles over the last year, we heard from people that clearer organization of friends, groups, and interests helps them feel freer to engage with the audience they believe is most relevant. And we’ve seen the success of separate interest-based accounts on Instagram, so we’re excited to bring this option to Facebook," said Meta.

According to Meta, users can be five different people on with one account.

But because different profiles are treated as different accounts, notification and privacy settings from one profile can be unique, and don’t carry over to users' other profiles.

Some settings are also managed separately for each profile, such as choosing who can see a profile’s posts or who can send friend requests to that profile.

"We recommend checking your privacy settings for each new profile you create, and you can update privacy settings for your profiles at any time. Your main Facebook profile won’t show that you have Additional Personal Profiles," said Meta

However, to ensure that users are what they say they are, Meta said that its" longstanding policy on Account Integrity and Authentic Identity states that your main Facebook profile must be in the name you go by in everyday life — and this is not changing."

What this means, while users can choose any name for their additional profiles, they cannot do so for their main profile.

"We remain committed to preventing impersonation and identity misrepresentation," Meta said.

It's worth noting that additional personal profiles users create have default settings automatically assigned to it.

It's also worth noting that at launch, some of Facebook's existing features, like Dating, Marketplace, Professional Mode and payments, won't be available to additional personal profiles.
