The Frustrated Android, The Google 'iPager', And The Relentless Campaign To Make Apple 'Get The Message'

24/09/2023

RCS is supported by most Android phones and major carriers around the world. However, Apple has not yet adopted RCS, which means that iPhone users cannot send and receive RCS messages.

Google has been trying to convince Apple to use RCS since at least 2016. Then, in 2019, Google launched the "Get the Message" campaign to pressure Apple to adopt RCS. The campaign includes a website, social media posts, and advertisements aimed to highlight the benefits of RCS messaging and the drawbacks of the SMS system.

In 2022, Google launched a new website and campaign called "Get the Message: RCS for everyone" to further help raise awareness of the benefits of RCS messaging and to pressure Apple to adopt the standard.

Google has also tried to convince Apple to adopt RCS through private negotiations. However, Apple still refused to adopt the standard.

And this is clearly making Google annoyed, if not frustrated.

According to Android in a dedicated web page on its website, Apple just got it wrong.

"Blurry videos, broken group chats, lack of encryption and more. Texting between iPhones and Android phones feels like using tech from another era, because it is – Apple refuses to adopt modern texting standards," Android said.

In the modern days of internet and technology, "texting shouldn't feel like using a pager."

According to Android, it's Apple that downgraded the texting experience between iOS devices and Android devices into SMS and MMS, both of which, are technologies from the 1990s.

Its proposal, is for Apple to adopt RCS.

With "modern industry standard–for those texts," Apple should solve the problem of texting "without changing iPhone-to-iPhone conversations, and making messaging better for everyone."

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, a messaging standard that is designed to replace SMS and MMS. Advantages of SMS and MMS include:

  • Higher quality photos and videos.
  • Read receipts.
  • Typing indicators.
  • Group chats with more than 10 people.
  • End-to-end encryption.

Because Apple has yet to embrace RCS, every time an Android user sends a text message to an iPhone user, the message is sent as an ordinary SMS message.

And because of this particular reason, the messages between those phones will be displayed in green bubbles on the Android phone.

Besides using the #GetTheMessage campaign, Google is also creating what it calls the 'iPager,' which is a satirical device to promote the adoption of RCS messaging, and make fun of Apple.

According to Google, this fictional device uses outdated messaging technology, like the one Apple uses when texting with Android.

While iPager is not real, but the problems that Apple causes by using SMS are, and Android is starting to show its frustration.

Google created iPager to raise awareness of the issue and to encourage Apple to adopt RCS messaging.

Google hopes that by raising awareness of the issue and the benefits of RCS messaging, it can convince Apple to adopt the new standard. This would improve the messaging experience for everyone, regardless of what type of phone they use.

There are a number of reasons why Apple has not yet adopted RCS.

The first biggest reason, is to keep iOS users locked into its ecosystem. This is because iMessage, its own a proprietary messaging platform, is only available on Apple devices. Apple does not want to adopt RCS because it would make iMessage less unique.

Apple does not want to give Android users the same features.

A number of companies and organizations are working to make RCS the standard for messaging, and for its part, Google is one of the biggest proponents of RCS.

The tech giant has been working with carriers and phone manufacturers to promote the standard.

Due to Apple's stance, Google is indeed infuriated.

Google knows that Apple knows this. And this is why Google thinks that it's "awkward" for Apple for not using RCS.

Google even went as far as promoting other messaging apps, like Signal and WhatsApp, if people wish to text but not using RCS-based texting.

But regardless, business is business, and as a company conducting business for profit, Apple has the rights to do whatever it likes, as long as it doesn't violate the laws.

At this time, Google can only hope that Apple can "get the message" and eventually adopt RCS.

According to Google, this should improve the messaging experience for everyone, regardless of what type of phone people use.
