04/05/2023

In the video of the Incident, which took place on May 4th, shows two Women paraded naked, and assaulted.

The first woman, the older of the two, had her breasts fondled by a man. The second woman, the younger of the two, had her breasts caressed by a man, her genital groped by another man, after she was slapped by yet another man. The mob of men then pushed the two women into a field, before the video abruptly ends.

The incident happened in the northeastern state of Manipur.

The state, located in the Thoubal district in the majority Meitei-dominated valley, is only a few kilometers from the state capital Imphal.

According to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), the men in the video constantly molested the helpless women, who cried and plead with their captors.

"The gang rape of the women happened after the village was burnt down and two men - one middle-aged and another a teenager - were beaten to death by the mob," the ITLF said.

The clash displaced many people throughout the region.

When the 26-second video went viral, it quickly received a global outrage.

During a police complaint, one of them said that she "was brutally gang-raped in broad daylight," after being "snatched by the violent mob" and forced to strip.

In their statement, the women said that hundreds of people from the majority community, mostly men, were carrying weapons, and entered their village. Then, they started looting and even burning their homes.

At least some of the women in the tribe managed to flee towards a a nearby forest for safety.

But those who failed, were captured.

And as for the two unfortunate women, were from the Kuki-Zomi tribe. They were caught by the mob, while they were running to the nearest police station.

The video that went viral, was taken by one of the men, who allegedly involved in the mob.

According to reports, one of the women was raped in front of her father and brother.

Some of of the women who got caught, who then managed to escape, were taken to a relief camp.

Questions were then asked following the incident, where people demanded answer about the authorities' role.

Many were asking why it took them so long to act.

Two of the survivors have even accused the police of being present, but "not doing anything to help them".

The police have not denied the accusations and some media reports have quoted unnamed police officials as saying that they were "outnumbered."

But due to the mounting pressure, the police have since opened a case of gang rape and abduction against "unknown armed miscreants."

The police made their first arrest, 78 days after the incident. The first person detained, is the 32-year-old man seen in the video wearing a green T-shirt.

The police added that they are making an "all out effort to arrest the culprits at the earliest," and are trying to identify others in the video.

Manipur's chief minister, Biren Singh, promised harsh consequences, and even said that capital punishment would be considered.

India's chief justice, DY Chandrachud, called the incident "deeply disturbing and simply unacceptable."

"Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife. It's the grossest of constitutional abuse [...] If the government does not act, we will," he said.

The incident has sparked strong reactions from other politicians.

Federal minister Smriti Irani, called the incident "condemnable and downright inhuman," whereas some opposition leaders also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party government for not doing enough to deal with the violence.

Congress party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadhra added that the "images of sexual violence against women from Manipur are heart wrenching", adding that women and children face the maximum brunt of violence in society.

She wondered why the federal government and the prime minister "were sitting blindly on the violent actions in Manipur".

"Do such images and violent incidents not disturb them?" she tweeted.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also condemned the incident, saying that the incident is the "kind of heinous act cannot be tolerated in the Indian society."

"The situation in Manipur is becoming very worrying. I appeal to the prime minister to pay attention to the situation in Manipur. Please take strict action against the culprits seen in the video of this incident. There should be no place for people of such criminal nature in India," he tweeted.

"There should be no place for people of such criminal nature in India."

"Peace has to be restored in Manipur."

Opposition politicians demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement on the crisis in Manipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi then made a statement to say about this:

"My heart is full of pain and anger, what has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven."

"The incident is shameful for the country, the guilty will not be spared."

The unrest at Manipur.

In the northeastern state of Manipur, ethnic violence has taken place.

Clashes broke out between the politically-dominant Meitei Hindu community of the valley and the Christian Kuki-Zomi tribals who live in the hills, after the Meiteis, which is the state's main ethnic group, demanded tribal status which gives access to benefits such as forest land and government job and education quotas.

The incident has caused chaos that took the lives of more than 130 people.

Tens of thousands of people were displaced, and worshipping places and homes are burned down.

Some 60,000 have become refugees in their own land.

About 10,000 army and paramilitary soldiers have been deployed across the state to restore law and order. Curfew and restrictions on movement have also been put in place in sensitive areas. They also took precautions, because both of the confronting communities have formed armed vigilante groups that have put up bunkers and carry out patrols to protect their territory.

In response to the virality of the video, the federal government has asked all social media companies to delete the video from their platforms.

But the nature of the internet is making this attempt next to futile, because the video is also uploaded to forums and external websites.
