Everything changes and evolves. But when it comes to technology, particular those that is on the internet, the changes can be fast and often.

Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, he made numerous changes to the popular microblogging platform. Even after he appointed a new CEO, it's apparent that Twitter is still operating under Musk's shadows, due to how influential he is in the platform, as well as in the industry.

And Meta, the tech giant that owns pretty much all of the world's biggest social media platforms, is trying to compete with Twitter by utilizing the fact how fragile Twitter is following Musk's acquisition.

To do that, the company introduces 'Threads', which according to the announcement, is "a new app, built by the Instagram team, for sharing text updates and joining public conversations."

The Threads app, which is initially made available to download in 100 countries, allows users to create posts of up to 500 characters.

In all, it's very similar to Twitter.

Meta calls the new app an "initial version", with extra features planned including the ability to interact with people on some other social media apps like Mastodon.

"Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text," the company said.

While Threads is a standalone app, it's actually part of Instagram.

This is because to use Threads, users have to log in using their Instagram account, and that their Instagram username will carry over to Thread by default.

The good thing is that, Threads allow users to "easily" share their posts that can include links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes in length, to Instagram.

Users can also control some privacy settings, like the ability to limit who can "mention" them and filter out replies to posts that contain specific words.

Unfollowing, blocking, restricting or reporting other profiles will also be possible, and any accounts users block on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads.

While it experience quite a few issues here and there during its launch, Threads had a mostly smooth introduction, and largely received positive reception.

While there are several other Twitter alternatives available, like Mastodon.

Threads is a different being because it's Meta's, and it's connected to Instagram, which mean that it can tap into the billions of users already on those platforms.

Unlike rivals, including Twitter, Threads has the potential of becoming a beast.

The potential 'Twitter Killer' already gained 30 million users in just hours of its launch.

And in less than a week, the number of users registered to Mark Zuckerberg's Threads, shot up to 100 million users.

But because Threads is Meta's, privacy advocates, especially rivals, are concerned about the amount of data it may collect.

Even Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter who has long stepped down from the company, tweeted a screenshot of the types of data Threads might request including, location, browsing history, contacts, and financial information.

"All your Threads are belong to us", he tweeted.

Twitter also showed its concern, with Musk saying that Meta is "cheating."

Meta said that it takes "inspiration" from other products, but others responded by saying how the Story features on Facebook and Instagram are more like Snapchat's feature, and that Reels on Instagram are unmistakably similar to TikTok.

According to them, Threads is Meta's answer to Twitter.

Many commentators have suggested that it's no coincidence the app has launched amid upheavals at Twitter.

Since Musk took over Twitter, many users of Twitter have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the platform and with his stewardship, erratic behavior and political views.
