ChatGPT Starts Getting Integrated Into Cars, Thanks To Microsoft's Partnership With Mercedes-Benz

16/06/2023

OpenAI's Chatgpt has made numerous headlines, thanks to its massive capabilities, and since then, developers have been embedding the technology into many things.

To name a few, the world's most advanced robots embedded with it to experience the world, a child's toy also wants to "conquer" the world with it, and Boston Dynamics' robot dog has it.

A person had even created a "wife", before euthanizing her..

This time, things stepped up a bit further, when ChatGPT is making its debut in the automotive industry.

And that is thanks to the partnership between Microsoft and Mercedes-Benz.

The German car manufacturer is known for creating luxurious cars that fit head-of-states and diplomats, performance cars, as well as electric vehicles, among others.

And this time, according to an announcement, Mercedes-Benz is partnering with Microsoft to have the latter's ChatGPT AI available for testing to more than 900,000 of the former's vehicles in the U.S..

The luxury automaker said the emerging technology is meant to be used as a Voice assistant, which can be requested through its existing MBUX's "Hey, Mercedes" voice command.

But because ChatGPT is way smarter than its own, Mercedes-Benz expects to ChatGPT to greatly expand its existing system's capabilities.

"While most voice assistants are limited to predefined tasks and responses, ChatGPT leverages a large language model to greatly improve natural language understanding and expand the topics to which it can respond," the carmaker said in a release.

According to Mercedes-Benz, its U.S. customers can enroll to the optional beta program via the company's app, called 'Mercedes me', or directly from the vehicle using the voice command: "Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program."

Eric Boyd, corporate vice president of Microsoft's AI platform, said the integration of ChatGPT into vehicles should increase voice commands and interaction; task capabilities; and allow follow-up questions, in addition to other things.

"Unlike standard voice assistants that often require specific commands, ChatGPT excels at handling follow-up questions and maintaining contextual understanding. Drivers can ask complex queries or engage in multi-turn conversations, receiving detailed and relevant responses from the voice assistant," Boyd wrote in a blog post.

Before ChatGPT was introduced by OpenAI, the AI field was kind of dull, and rarely make hype beyond its own realm and domain. But after the AI's debut, it pretty much disrupted everything.

Generative AIs in general, have become a growing discussion in various industries, and many companies that aren't even tech-related are trying to explore the possibilities of using the AI.

Some wish to utilize its advanced capabilities, while others just want to jump to the bandwagon to piggyback the hype it created.

Anyhow, in the automotive industry, there are companies that claim to have used advanced AI, or some sort of machine learning technologies, embedded inside its systems.

But Mercedes-Benz's partnership with Microsoft marks one of of the first specific use cases for ChatGPT.

Mercedes-Benz plans to test this ChatGPT integration for at least three months in order to gain sufficient customer feedback.

Mercedes-Benz shall consider further integration of the technology, following its finding, according to the companies.

According to Mercedes-Benz in the announcement, cars that can be enrolled in the beta test, include "all vehicles with MBUX of model series A 238, C 118, C 167, C 238, C 253, C 254, C 257, H 247, N 293, R 232, S 213, V 167, V 177, V 295, V 297, W 206, W 213, WV 223, X 167, X 243, X 247, X 253, X 254, X 294, X 296, Z 223 and Z 296."
