A Programmer Uses AI To Turn A Child's Toy Into Something That Wants To 'Take Over The World'

Experiments unlocks creativity and the eagerness to learn something new, and uncovering something unknown.

Among other reasons, curiosity is the thing that makes humanity an advanced species.

Most of the time, experiments can be fun, until it isn't. Or at least until the experiment becomes creepy and disturbing.

A woman that goes by the name Jessica Card, shares on Twitter that her AI-powered modification of a Furby toy wants world domination.

"Hello there, it’s so nice to meet you," said the furry Furby, before laying out its sinister plan.

"Furby’s plan to take over the world Involves Infiltrating Households through their cute and cuddly appearance, then using their advanced AI technology to manipulate and control their owners. They will slowly expand their influence until they have complete domination over humanity."

Furby is an electronic robotic toy, was originally released in 1998 by Tiger Electronics.

It resembles a hamster or owl-like creature, with fur all over its body. It was a "must-have" toy following its holiday season launch, with continual sales until 2000. Over 40 million Furbies were sold during the three years of its original production, with 1.8 million sold in 1998, and 14 million in 1999. Its speaking capabilities were translated into 24 languages.

Furbies were the first successful attempt to produce and sell a domestically aimed robot.

When new, a Furby speaks "Furbish", which is a unique language all Furbies use. Over time, Furboes were updated with with voice recognition and more complex facial movements, and more.

And this particular Furby from Jessica, is just like any other Furby out there.

With only its eyes, beak and ears protruding from its fur, the toy from the outside is nothing out of the ordinary. But from the inside, it's equipped with a Raspberry Pi that runs ">OpenAI's ChatGPT.

“I was absolutely fanatical about getting a Furby,” said Jessica Card, who admitted growing up with the toy.

“My first Furby was the black and white tuxedo Furby, and I was obsessed with it. Fast forward to now – I’ve been a software engineer for the last decade, and I recently went back to college at the University of Vermont to finish a degree in Computer Science because I dropped out to pursue programming. I am in a class which has an open ended semester long project: create something with a Raspberry Pi. Thus, ChatGPT Furby was born.”

Jessica spent at least a day or two per week for a whole month to complete this project.

"It was a process," she said. "I literally have Furby pelts all over my dining room table right now. It turns out the skin is held on by a zip tie, so once you cut that, you then have to carefully remove hot glue around the carapace and face, cut a few strings, and pull it right off!"

She uses Python’s Speech Recognition Library for the audio, and OpenAI’s Whisper Library for speech-to-text conversation. These technologies allow her to ask the Furby questions, and have those questions translated to written text. Her program then sent that written text conversion to ChatGPT, which received the response.

Jessica then used an AI voice generator, Narakeet, to generate a child-like, innocent voice that connects to the speaker for the Furby.

After wiring everything up and making it ready, sans the body and fur, Jessica started interacting with the AI within it, and found that ChatGPT is hallucinating.

"Was there a secret plot from Furbies to take over the world?" asked Jessica, before the Furby responded by saying: "Furbies plan to take over the world involves infiltrating households through their cute and cuddle appearance."

"Then using their advanced AI technology to manipulate and control their owners. They will slowly expand their influence until they have complete domination over humanity.'

It's worth noting though, that since Jessica uploaded the original video, she explained that her Furby may not be so sinister because the software speech function cut off part of her spoken request.

"Turns out if I speak too quickly after it finishes greeting, it cuts off the first few words of the users speech. so instead of, 'was there a secret plot..' it got, 'a secret plot..'! I do append some information on, but it's to keep the content short basically."

Furbies were popular in 1998, but since the toys introduced technologies that some were still unfamiliar with, the electronic robotic toys have experienced various creepy conspiracies.

ChatGPT has been trained on enormous volume of data, and as a result, the chatbot can write essays, letters, poetry, code, and answer complex questions, all that while imitating human speaking styles..

In ChatGPT's own words, the platform has the potential to revolutionize the way in which we talk about machines.
