WhatsApp Launches Picture-In-Picture Support For iOS, Captions To Documents, And More

Smartphones are designed to allow users to multitask. Thanks to increasingly powerful chips, this is possible.

WhatsApp from Meta, is a popular messaging app, widely used around the world. And this time, it announced a full Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Support for video calls for users on iPhones. The feature allows users to minimize the Whatsapp app, while they're doing something else on their phone.

It all began back in December 2022, when WhatsApp announced in a blog post, that it was "beta testing" PiP on iOS.

According to the post, the feature allows users to "easily multitask while on a call thanks to a minimized in-call video screen."

With the release notes for version 23.3.77 of the app, confirms that all iOS users can finally benefit from PiP on WhatsApp.

Before this, if a WhatsApp user wanted to use other Apps while on a video call, they had to exit the call and end the conversation.

But with PiP support, users can simply navigate away from the call, and the group video will continue like normal, but in a small window on their screen.

By being able to multitask, users can switch to other apps or features on their iPhone, while still being able to see and hear their conversation.

The PiP feature is available for both one-on-one and group video calls, making it easier for users to have discussions with multiple people at once.

This feature is especially useful for businesses, as it allows them to have video conferences with clients or colleagues while still being able to access their other work-related apps and features.

PiP for WhatsApp works the same way as in other apps, such as Apple’s FaceTime.

Once users join a video call and minimize the app, PiP will automatically shows the video in a small floating window that overlays all other apps.

Users can choose to move the small window to either one of the four corners of the screen.

Users can also resize the window if they want.

It's worth noting that Apple added support for PiP mode in 2020 with the release of iOS 14, whereas Google added support back in 2017, by releasing Android 8 which is known as Android Oreo.

However, third-party Android apps were able to gain access to PiP mode faster than their iOS counterparts. Users on iOS were able to minimize video playback to a floating window in the second half of 2022.

PiP on iOS all covered, WhatsApp goes on.

The update also brings a number of other features.

For example, users can now add captions when sending documents.

Additionally, Meta has also tweaked group chat settings, allowing users to add longer subjects and descriptions to better describe what the chat groups are all about.

There’s also an option to create an avatar users can use for their profile photo and stickers.
