Controversial Playboy Model Apologized For Flashing Her Private Parts In A Mosque In Turkey

05/01/2021

The female body in Islam must be carefully defined, controlled and concealed to neutralize its impact in the public domain.

But since the female body is also one of the most valued things in both culture and arts, and even politicized in which it is even considered a battleground for ideological, philosophical and religious debates and agendas, it has since become problematic and a controversial topic throughout history.

This is why in Islam, women should value their body by covering it while in the society, in order to curb any form of social misbehavior by others.

But still, since nobody should have a total control of someone else's body, this allows some women to be able to use their bodies, and treat them as a tool to support, protest, subvert or at times to transform the patriarchal rules of the society.

Marisa Papen is a Playboy model, and that she came under fire after she stripped off in one of Istanbul's most famous landmarks, as a protest against religion

And now she is sorry.

Papen has finally apologized for having the naked photoshoot in Turkey.

Marisa Papen’s controversial shoot sparked fury in 2018, when she bared her privates at Hagia Sophia.

Hagia Sophia, which has stood since 537 AD, is one of Istanbul’s landmarks. It's architectural beauty is a heritage of both Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. It was originally built as a cathedral for a Greek Orthodox church. This lasted from 360 AD until the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453. It served as a mosque until 1935, a museum, and then again a mosque in 2020.

And in 2016, Papen was there, dressed in black, Muslim woman attire that covered all of her body except her face and her hands. She entered the mosque, stood at one of the doors, and flashed her genitalia, including her public hair.

Then, there is another which shows her lying down on top of a roof, naked, showing her vulva, with the mosque at the background.

Locals who realized this after the photos were uploaded, were horrified by the woman's public display.

But at the time, the Belgian model didn’t see anything wrong with the snaps.

In a blog post, she implied stripping off was only a protest against the tyranny of religion.

"This is all about a message, and the message is all about making people think for themselves through our imagery," she said.

"We're trying to help people break free of their mental imprisonment by the governments and religions of this planet. We have all become so blinded and dummified that we just accept."

"We do not question anything anymore. Everything is controlled, manipulated."

She summarized her thoughts in a post on her website titled 'God is a Woman.'

There are also other photos that offend the Muslims, which include her a photo of her holding the Qur'an, and with a written "bla bla bla" on top of its pages, and the ones that showed her wearing Muslim attire, but naked underneath.

Papen showed no remorse when she took the photos.

In fact, soon after that, the Belgian model who has become famous for her outlandish displays, sparked outrage again in Jerusalem, where was pictured in the buff in front of the Wailing Wall (the Al-Buraq Wall) which is the holiest place for the Jews.

Marisa wrote a blog post called 'The Wall of Shame' on her website about it.

She said to the readers to not "judge a book by its title," and that she knows readers would "project on me because I have done something so disrespectful," and that she "should burn in hell."

"I know my mailbox is about to fill up with threats and angriness again – to all the people typing down their furiosity right now, save your energy. I don’t even open them…"

She said that she wanted to push the boundaries of religion and politics even further.

That, until two years later, that she showed a change of heart, addressing to the photoshoot in Turkey.

She issued an apology to the "people of Turkey," which follows reports that she could allegedly go to prison for doing what she did.

She apologized to the "people (she) may have hurt."

"I wanted to take a moment to explain my reasoning and philosophy."

"When I visited Turkey in 2018, it was in the spirit of love, driven by a dream of unity. My work is often seen as controversial but it’s really just a human body taking a stand for equality and freedom. I created some imagery that reveal the separation between following and freedom. My intention is to inspire positive change, to close the gap and to illuminate what’s hidden or repressed in the shadows of society."

"To the people I may have hurt with my artistic statements, I apologize."

Marisa began her venture into the controversial sphere when she went nude for photoshoots at the Karnak Temple Complex near Luxor, Egypt

And because of that, she went to jail.

She also made controversies, when she was photographed dragging a large wooden crucifix across a street in the Vatican with St. Peter's Basilica visible in the background, and among others, also include her being crucified, and had a sword that appeared to be inserted into her vagina, unstimulated.

Papen, and her Australian photographer Jesse Walker, were arrested again for taking a nude photo of Papen sitting on a pile of bibles on St. Peter's Square.

"I was right in the middle of putting on my underwear when two police cars suddenly arrived and another four cops approached us on foot, brandishing their batons and saying 'passports please'," she said, after the pair was chased.

They were taken to the police station where they were questioned and detained for 10 hours. There, the pair had their fingerprints and mugshots taken, and a raid at their Airbnb apartment, the police found props for the photoshoots.

"There we were again, behind bars in a tiny little cell with dirt and ash on the floor. Jesse and I looked at each other and we burst out laughing," said Papen, who describes herself as a "free-spirited and wild-hearted expressionist."

Walker said they are used to getting arrested for their work.

"We are willing to put it all on the line for these photoshoots even if it means jail time. It is something we thrive on and are very used to now so it is nothing new. I like to think ENKI and Marisa are the two most controversial artists and brand on the planet right now, and that's something I am very proud of."

When she explained the reasons behind her controversial adventures. she said that the photos are part of her art project called 'FXCKRLGN', which she collaborates with the Frank Rose Gallery in Los Angeles.

It's this gallery that sells of of her photos, which range from £80 to £17,800, as well as the controversial 'Ave Marisa' doll, where Papen is depicted as Mary holding a black baby Jesus, which sells for £62.

"I think anyone who has the capacity to understand art and its message can see why this whole concept is so special and next level," said a spokesperson for the Frank Rose Gallery. "There is a huge unpredictable risk tied to each and every frame."

Papen wanted to take the risk because she always concluded that "religion takes away individual power." She kept asking herself the existence of the divine and this world since she was a teenager,

"You give your strength away to someone else when you don't know if that person – be it Allah or God – exists in reality," she said, despite explaining that she "has nothing against religion."

Papen believes that religion enriches people individually, but claims that religion "does not do enough good for the world."

"For me, the biggest problem is with the institutions built around religion. They are driven by money and are soulless."

And when speaking about whether the things she did were only for fame, she declined that accusation.

"If being popular was my goal, I don't think it would be such a wise decision to upset two thirds of the world."

"I thought to myself, imagine if the Vatican was a place that actually helped people. Imagine if all these huge churches opened their doors for people in need."

Papen is also unfazed by those who called her "an attention seeker."

All she wants, is delivering a message to change, and that she is doing that through jaw-dropping nude photoshoots.

If what she wants is fame and internet recognition, she would have been an active social media users, which apparently, she isn't.

Besides visiting religious places, Marisa Papen has also taken naked photos around the world.

According to her website, she has gone to Andorra, Bahamas, Balearic Islands, Belgium, Canary Islands, Chile, Congo, Cook Island, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Luxemburg, Malta, Martinique, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, St. Barth, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the UK, the U.S. in various states, and Zanzibar.

It's worth noting that even though she apologized for what she finally considered inappropriate, she has no plan to end her activism.

But still, she stopped updating her website with explicit photos, and instead, she posted other kinds of photography, as well as sharing poems.

She also put an interest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), when she released her own token called 'Flower of Life', which is an uncensored close up photo of her vagina.

"There is no such thing as sinful skin. Our naked bodies are always in humble integrity. There is divine poetry in our sexes," she said.
