Diablo Immortal Ends Release Delay Caused By 'Winnie The Pooh' Social Media Post

25/07/2022

Diablo Immortal is a hack-and-slash action role-playing game, considered among the most anticipated games on 2022.

Having launched ahead of schedule, the Activision Blizzard Entertainments' game has been making headlines on the internet for many reasons.

First, it is because the game is the first Diablo installment that focuses on mobile devices in the massively multiplayer online action role-playing game genre. Second, it's because of its sneaky microtransaction business model, which could cost players upward to more than $100,000 to become the strongest. And third, it's because the game has received the lowest user score ever in the history of game review aggregator.

And not only that, it's also because the game was delayed in China.

The reason for that, was because of a social media post that could be interpreted as criticism of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The post by Diablo Immortal on its Weibo account that delayed the game's launch in China.

Diablo Immortal, the free-to-play Diablo game for mobile and PC, was delayed in China because the social media post, which came from the official Diablo Immortal Weibo account.

It reportedly alluded to Winnie the Pooh.

The beloved fictional teddy bear has long been banned in mainland China, because netizens have been comparing the character to Xi Jinping.

And here, the official Diablo Immortal Weibo account made use of Winnie the Pooh, and quickly sparked the authorities' anger.

The government had made Weibo to suspend the account in question for “violating relevant laws and regulations.”

On July 25th, Activision Blizzard Entertainments quietly released the game to all people in China.

The game landed on Apple’s App Store on the Chinese mainland and several local Android app stores on Sunday midnight.

The game that was co-developed by Chinese tech giant NetEase had made a number of optimizations for users in China, without saying any details regarding it.

Diablo, the Lord of Terror, appeared as the splash screen on Diablo Immortal game.

Diablo Immortal had the "biggest launch in franchise history."

But the game has received some criticism for how much it costs to upgrade the characters, among other reasons

In its defense, Mike Ybarra, the President of Blizzard Entertainment, said that most players aren't even spending any money on the game and that its monetization only comes in "at the end game."

"When we think about monetization, at the very highest level it was, 'How do we give a free Diablo experience to hundreds of millions of people, where they can literally do 99.5% of everything in the game?'" he said.

"The monetization comes in at the end game."

It's worth noting that Activision Blizzard also delayed the game’s launch in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and other Asia-Pacific markets, although not as dramatically, from June 23 to July 8.
